What's your views on the 5 series from 2010 to 2012 I.e. how reliable are they?

A few of my colleagues drive 08 to 10 520ds and all are happy with them. They do seem to be quite a good car.

One them did have to get a new Auto box (car had less than 50k). After a bit of a battle with BMW, they did a deal as it was just out of warranty

By and large a good car though.

Maybe have a look over on BMW-driver.net for more detailed info

What are you comparing it too and what's important to you?

BMW had problems with timing chains on the diesels for a couple of years (the crankshaft wasn't properly made - no surprises there with a modern BMW and it resulted in them starting to rattle, and because the chain is at the back of the engine it's an engine out job to replace the chain and crankshaft, over €6,000 to do it right:eek:), should be sorted by 2010 though.

The OP is probably talking about the F10 rather than the older E60.

Comfort wise they are great - i'm close to 35k km since feb and find very little tiredness after long journeys.

If you do high mileage, go for auto. If you need to carry stuff, the touring is brilliant for a big load and will carry 1/2 ton (i carried 40 pack x 15kg wood flooring to southwest Kerry) and very little difference on driving feel

mpg comfortable driving (my speedy days are long long gone), i get about 48-50 from 2.0 auto - if you are real careful and stick to 100km/hr on motorways, you'll get 55mpg

    please no comment on mpg / litres per 100km - I'm touching 50 and won't be changing habits - an 8 by 4 sheet is still an 8 by 4, not a 2400 x 1200 :D

We have a 2010 F10 with over 40k miles on it now. No bothers with it to date, grand car all round, very capable and quite comfortable. I can't say it is as comfortable as our previous Saab 9-5s (had 3 in a row) but probably a better all rounder. We have the satnav option which is a waste of time really and with €400 to update the maps, a rip off (let alone the initial cost). Tyres (run flats) are pricy, we have the 18s and first change of all four was over €1,200.

Can I hijack this thread save me starting a new one. It seems that the world and their misses has an F10 520D. I too have been looking at various different options. Ive been a BMW driver for 14 years and I won't be driving anything else. Currently in an E70 X5, but the fuel economy is a killer.

My question about the F10's is with the amount of them being sold, will it kill the resale value of them in 2-3 years time? Will the M Sport hold better value than the SE? Automatic over Manual?

I'd go for the M Sport and the Auto, but that's just me.

There seems to be an unreal amount of them that are SEs with no extras of any description. Admittedly the SE is pretty good these days, it even has leather (and the real stuff, not the Fusion rubbish) as standard now, but still there are a few things it doesn't have that I'd want, like electric seats, lumbar support, satnav, xenon headlights etc.

Personally I'd get a 530d because the automatic is in the same tax band as a 520d but a 530d will have the all important six cylinders:)! I wouldn't bother with a 525d now that it only has four cylinders though, if you want a faster 520d, get it remapped.

Early 2010 F10s are still fetching decent money, even the most basic manuals.
