Hi guys, just wondering if anyone knows of an indoor running track available to the general public in the city? I began running in the summer, loving it. I don't mind the rain now at all but kind of dreading the windy, freezing rain. I live out the way a bit, work and pick up the kids in town so I don't want to be sitting about in cold damp clothes after my run. I can't think of an indoor track and I've asked about but to no avail. Thanks in advance..

Well, I chose running to exercise because it's free. Treadmills are quite expensive. Just a basic running track.Sorry for the vagueness,I'm new to the sport, well all sport really.I'm starting out and don't want to let the westerly weather stop me during the winter. So,I'm not sure what different types there are..Sorry..

Sorry but there are only 2 indoor athletics tracks in the county. 1 in Nenagh and 1 under construction in Athlone.

get some good winter running gear, especially a specialised windproof, rainproof, breathable jacket.

hat, gloves and leggings and you're away.... winter should be no deterent from running outside. i run all winter regardless of the cold or wet (cos i'm so hard)

besides i can't imagine anything more soul destroying than running round and round and round and round and rou..........

Since Galway City doesn't have a track I'm moving this to Running for general running discussion/ alternatives.
You could try the track in Dangan, just dress well.

I'm just wondering about the track in Dangan: is it there to be used whenever?

I'm actually a student so in theory should be allowed use it regardless. But firstly I have no idea where it is, do I have to pay, are you allowed to train on it when others are running on it, is it open 24/7, is there track etiquette.....etc.

I'm gonna look elsewhere for the answers to these too, but if anyone knows off the top of their heads it'd be sound!

I'm not sure what the college allows for students use of the track, I'm sure there's an athletics club in the college that you could ask about training sessions etc.

    Etiquette:-
Some of the galway athletics clubs, and the triathlon club have it booked at various times during the week - usually evening sessions.
While some clubs may allow you to run in the outside lanes while their session is on, you would certainly be frowned upon if you turned up and ran on the inner lanes while a session was taking place.
If you wanted to join the club though, that's a different story & you would be welcomed and invited to take part in the session.

With the nights coming in, it will be dark, and so the clubs will also be forking out for use of the floodlights on top of the track rental, so best to use your judgement on when to train there.

Location: Its out the Moycullen road, past Westwood Hotel & turn right near the top of the hill - here it is on google maps
There's also a path out from the college along the river that gets to the sports pitches nearby.

The track can be booked through NUIG sports office. Clubs have organised sessions generally long time bookings
The college put a pay meter 2 quid a pop to use which doesnt seem to work half the time , but most clubs would charge 2quid anyway for an organised session , on the track with a coach so its worth it
The gate is open sometimes to the track so people use it from time to time then
I think the purpose of pay per use is because of the big investment in it, track was relaid a year or two back, lanes get damaged etc, I have seen some right ones using it when doing sessions - kids cycling round the track, young ones drinking cans on the track or ppl bringing dogs etc around for walks....:) so you can see why..
And dont run in lane one if somebody is doing a session its a major breach of protocol!

Thanks spurscormac and brutes - very sound of ye.

It's good to know. Just getting into the running the last few months and haven't ventured to the track. After my marathon training i'm gonna focus on shorter distances and so it would be handy for intervals/repeats etc.

I'd be happy enough to pay a couple of quid for each use tbh. And I understand re clubs using it etc....I'd prob try and get there early morning anyway.

Might join a college or city athletics club in the new year, too.

Again - cheers for the replies.

McTigs-I guess that's the way to go, thanks. Yeah,I know a track would be mind numbing but I thought being a Dub in the whesht I might need the indoors..I think I ought to be used to it,17 years here at this stage. I'll get sorted gear wise and pound the paths, thanks.
