    Hi,

I am looking in to getting a new Car(second hand 07-10)
I am doing about 150 miles a day driving from Enniscorhty to Carrickmines. 5 days a week
So Motor and dual carraige way driving.

What would be the best disel car to get that can handle this mileage.
Replacement parts are not too expensive too!

    Whats your budget?

What do you like in a car, eg do you like small hatchback like a polo or would you like an estate like a passet or a 4x4 like a Suzuki Ignis/Sx4.

Or would you like a saloon with 4x4 like a saburu impreza or mazda 6 sport.

Are you bothered by tax so you can afford a 2.3 litre car or would you like a 0.6 smart car---very nice car btw...
so lots of question for you to answer and when you reply then we can find something for you...

Honda Accord 2.2 diesel will eat up the miles with ease.
Toyota Avensis also a great diesel 2.0ltr
Skoda Octavia or Superb great cars

You need a decenct diesel for those miles and above are some really good machines that will do what you need them for comfort fuel economy and go for a one with a few toys not just basic.

    Best of luck.

4wd not necessary if spending life cruising on motorway, handling or power not that important either. Comfort, refinement and fuel economy would be most important IMO.

Dont think the wife would be up for me staying away all week.

Would like some thing between 1.6 & 2l
6 speed gear box would be nice.
    Something with good fuel economy
    Lowish TAX
nothing too small as have a 8 month old girl so car will need to be big enough for all her STUFF. Smart car out of the running.
    not esate or 4X4

Have a 03 peugoet 308 at the moment. Great car but getting shook.
Wife has 07 opel Astra nice car but wouldnt like to drive it everyday

    07 mazda 3 1.6 diesel 4250eur

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/Mazda3/1.6-D-11/201229209181101/advert?channel=CARS

Mazda 6 withs lots of toys: 3 owners though
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/Mazda6/2.0-D-14/4413292205888680/advert?channel=CARS

Also would you consider automatic as it eats up the miles while your driving and imo is a lot better when you're doing high milage.

    Thanks

Both good cars but milage is HIGH on them, Especially for the amount of driving im doing.

Would i be better off going for an ex display model at the end of the year?

    Get something with cruise control.

Something that has had the sharp end of the depreciation already off it. I can't see the benefit of an automatic if you're doing mainly motorway miles.

    What's your budget?

To buy out right about 15k, but would perfer to go hire purchase. would be able to go about €100 a week for that.

I'd be looking at something comfy for that mileage and the French makes some comfy seats. Something like this perhaps?

Or even a new shape Skoda Superb if you can get over the styling:

For that type of driving, Auto isn't a must have - you'll be in 5th or 6th for the vast majority of the drive.

Lumbar support, armrest and a decent radio with an Aux/USB input would be high on mu list of priorities, along with long service intervals.

If you want something cheap that will do the job with no frills, maybe a Vectra 1.9CDTi 120ps. Decent performance and economy from that engine and most will have all the essentials. Not the most thrilling of cars to drive, but it's not going to be the most thrilling of journeys anyway. Good thing about the Vectra's are that they are cheap so you won't lose a fortune when you eventually change the car. At that sort of mileage it's going to be tanking in value. Think it's 30k service intervals on that engine.

For Mondeo is a decent machine for racking up the mileage, but the 1.8TDci engine is a bit of a dog and that's generally all that's around. 100bhp and the ecoNETIC (5speed 125ps) are actually better to drive than the Zetec 125ps (6speed) as there is less lag on acceleration. 20k service intervals on that.

Comfiest, and one of the most fuel effecient that I've had for my commute was a Superb 170ps Ambition. I found the seats incredibly comfy, and the standard spec gave lots of buttons to press on the boring daily grind in and out of the office. The 1.9Tdi version isn't as quick, but it's not horrifically slow. Should do the job well (and plenty of space for the little 'un in the back). 30k service intervals.

I've found the fuel economy on the various 1.6 diesels to be failry poor for mainly motorway use. They are very good up to 100km/h, but if you spend long periods over that then economy drops off a good bit and ends up worse than the 2.0d versions of the same car. I also don't like the French stuff as I can never get a comfy seating position, and that's a high priority when you are spending over an hour each way in a car.

+1 for something big and French for comfort and laziness :)

Unless you can find an Alfa 166 JTD with leather... An interior you can't be prised away from

When you are doing that type of driving Auto really is a must.. I was doing double his mileage a day on freeways and auto really was a blessing, It takes getting used to, but when you get used to it, the comfort is great.
