Opinions on which VW to keep?

    Hi there,
We have two cars, an '03 Passat Estate 1.9TDI and a 04' Polo (Petrol).
Both have about 135k on the clock. Both in excellent condition.

We want to get rid of one of them but we're not sure which one. We no longer need two cars and it's just a case of which one do we sell.

It's not really about the money either so I don't need to get into a conversation about which one would sell for more, it's more about which one is the better one to keep from a reliability point of view? Instinctively I feel the Passat is more reliable (it also drives like a beast and just feels like quality) but that's not based on any facts.

So what do you think? Which one should we say goodbye to?

I'd say goodbye to the Polo, just guessing here, but is it a 1.2? Even if it's the 1.4, I'd keep the diesel passat and just keep it well serviced.

You need to ask yourself which one can you live without more? If you don't need a car the size of the Passat or an estate then it makes more sense to sell that one. If the Polo is too small for you then it makes sense to sell that.

From a reliability perspective nobody ones enough about the history of two cars to advise on which one to flog.

From a practical point of view I'd take the Passat, from a financial the Polo as it's running costs should be lower. You should also ask yourself which car would you prefer to have to get into to go somewhere, which car would you prefer to drive for 5km or 500km. I rarely need a car but I still got myself a SAAB 9-5 as it gives me a bit of a buzz over having something else in my drive. It's comfortable and I like it, so I'm prepared to take a financial hit on it over having a Corsa or a Yaris.

But in your case I think you've answered your own question already:
Instinctively I feel the Passat is more reliable (it also drives like a beast and just feels like quality

    you should keep the Passat.

Thanks everyone. The Polo is a 1.2. Both cars are in excellent condition with full service history. No serious issues with either to report. In terms of purely which one I'd like to keep, Passat without hesitation. The size of the car is not an issue either as we can fit everything we need in either (we use both to ferry Child and Dogs without any problem, both boots are big. For the dogs, obviously :) )
My preference for the Passat is how if feels to drive and how it sounds, it growls beautifully.
I was really waiting to hear someone say "Passats start falling apart after 10 years" or "have you not had x go on the passat yet? Get rid of it before that happens"
All things being equal, the Polo will be the one to go. The only problem with the Passat is the size of it when trying to park in busy places but that's not too big a deal really.
