Photos disappeared from memory card

Hi all - I wonder if someone can help me - I just went to download my photos from the last week or so by inserting the hd card from my camera into my laptop and 30 photos are missing! The ones from before the missing 30 and the ones after the missing thirty are there but for some reason 30 which I took over 1 day (possibly 2) have disappeared. I have definitely not downloaded them previously! The number jumps from 3339 to 3360! When I check by playing on my camera they are not there.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Any chance they got renamed, and dropped down the list alphabetically? Or perhaps whatever software you use is set up to pull images from the meory card when it's plugged into the PC? I'd search my computer's hard drive, and perhaps search the card through the command line to make sure that there isn't some funny hidden file business going on.

Thanks for that. I've looked everywhere but can't find them! They're not on the camera either! :( I downloaded them the exact same way as always - just popped in the sd card and then "opened" folder to view files and copied them out! Anyone have any other ideas?

I'd be checking the recycle bin to see if I'd somehow accidentally deleted them to be honest. Plug the SD card back into the computer, and then check your recycle bin....

sounds like 20 photos, not 30?

Yeah you're right - 20 or so, that makes me feel a little better, but not much!
I have searched everywhere on my laptop and they're definitely not on it. I definitely copied all the photos since the last time I plugged in my sd card so it's as if they had disappeared off the sd card while it was in the camera. But I was the only one who had the camera and I definitely didn't delete photos off it :(

Have a look at the card with Recurva http://www.piriform.com/recuva in case you accidentally deleted them.

Ok did that, did it in deep scan mode too which took hours. And not a sign of them.
Just don't understand where the hell they've gone to, it's so weird :(

Please don't take this as me doubting you mate, but did you actually see the files on the SD card before you copied everything to your PC?? With the numbered file naming scheme of most cameras, it's easy to make a mistake, and honestly, if you haven't taken any photos on this card since copying them to the PC, and Recuva hasn't picked up anything, even one corrupted file, then if it were me, and my memory card, I'd be doubting that they were on the card to begin with. I've had issues before with my memory card not being read by the camera, and snapping ten or eleven photos that showed up on the camera's screen, but weren't written to the card (didn't notice the "can't read SD card" message. My line of thought would be heading in that direction, TBH.....

    Hi
Well I would have taken the missing photos over a period of 1 or 2 days. When I take a photo I always "play" it on the camera to check it's ok. So they were definitely on the camera (and therefore on the card) after I took them.
I downloaded about a weeks worth of photos, in the same way I always do, by putting the sd card in the laptop and copying them off. So I just can't for the life of me understand where they went!

Maybe you copied them to a different folder? As you know the number range of the missing images do a deep search of your entire HD for one and see if it turns up. If you find it in an odd location the rest should be there too.

No definitely not. Already did a deep scan of entire computer with sd card inserted using that recuva software and no joy.

Different type of search. This would use Windows search to look for a specific file eg. 3350.jpg (.NEF or whatever your default image is) in case it's filed elsewhere.

Oh sorry, I see what you mean. Just did that and the search returned no results. I can't understand where they've gone! I think it's just a mystery I'll never solve!

Ok, it has happened again! :-( I know, my own fault for continuing to use the camera. This time I have abit more information so I hope someone can help?

I was using my camera today, took around 20 photos. Somewhere in the middle of this I was playing back pics and a blue screen came up and said "cannot display file" (it is a sony digital compact). From that point approx 10 of my photos from today were missing off camera and around 30 from wed/thurs.

Does anyone know what is wrong and more importantly how I can retrieve these photos as they are extremely important to me? (given that I tried the recuva/searching my laptop/searching my memory card while inserted in laptop the last time and it showed nothing, basically they have gone missing from my memory card while it is still in the camera so when I download the missing ones will not be downloaded)

I would really appreciate some help with this? Is there any way they are still on the memory card but can't be seen and if so is there another way (other than what I tried last time) of searching it?

    Thanks

That's really helpful and completely abides by the ethos of boards!

As I said at the beginning of my post I know I should not have continued to use my camera.

If anyone has any helpful advice I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance

Get a new SD card and format it in the camera. Then test it a lot to check if it's a camera problem. Buy sandisk rescue pro and if that doesn't recover the photos then forget about it and don't use the card again.

    Thanks Effects
You reckon if Sandisk Rescue Pro doesn't find them that nothing will?
Is it possible that there is something physically wrong with the memory card even though it works fine most of the time? And if there is something physically wrong would the sandisk program work?
    Thanks again

I'd say it's the card. Sounds like the camera found an error trying to read it. If rescue pro can't recover the data then forget about it. Memory cards don't always fail completely. I have a cheap fuji CF card that failed on me then started working again. I managed to get my photos off the card but I would never trust it with anything important again.

I see that it's the same camera but are you still using the same memory card as well?
