Damaged back molar issue

If anyone can advise me on this - I would be grateful!

I had a rogue wisdom tooth a couple of years ago and it did a lot of damage to the molar in front of it. The wisdom tooth was removed and I got an extremely large filling in the molar. I was told that the filling might not hold, due to its size, but it has.

Yesterday, a piece of tooth came away at the back corner, leaving the filling exposed. It doesn't hurt but is very sharp. I have a dental appointment for later, but I wanted to get an idea of what to expect.

Does anyone know how they will proceed with a tooth like this?

Op have had similar happen to me, so most likely a root canal and then crown, but the dentist will be best placed to advise.

    Wow! What did that cost?

My RC was €900 and then a slightly less amount for the crown.
However both aspects were done by specialists in RCs and crowns.
It will be probably be cheaper with a general dentist.

I really hope there's something else they can do in that case, I just raided every cent I have to get back on the road in terms of driving, I have not got another +€1000 to fork out on this bloody tooth :(

    noooooooooooooooo!

a broken tooth doesn't automatically mean root canal and a crown.

root canal treatments are done where there's an infection, or in some very rare cases, to facilitate a post crown where it's done electively.
since the OP has said it's not painful, more than likely will just need a filling.
if a fair amount of the tooth is gone, maybe, a crown or onlay.
you're going to the dentist later, you'll get accurate advise there

I hope you're right! No it's not painful at all, the damage is superficial. The filling is huge and takes up the back half of my tooth. The tooth at the back has completely come away (it was only a thin layer of enamel left).

Fingers crossed they can put it to rights fairly easily.

Listen to him, he's a dentist :D I am not!

However for both my RCs i had pretty much the same issue, big molar filling, break off of a piece of tooth and then RC and crown.

Do let us know how you get on OP

    Haha good to know!

I suppose it varies extensively from case to case. We'll see what my dentist suggests anyway :)

I'll post as soon as I'm out of the chair :p

did you not have any pain at all? how was the root filling justified?
just interested, i'd avoid having to do a root filling if i could.

    Nope for both molars.

I'd quite large and deep fillings in both teeth, but no pain.

I keep my promises so am here with my update! Currently on a bus home with a very numb face/tongue.

She built it back up with more filling and did some kind of bonding technique between the fillings. I had a clamp around my tooth? :)

So relieved to have it sorted, fingers crossed it stays this way! Thanks for all the input guys :)

So... what you're saying is one of the dentists on here with a number of years of education and practice is right and a lay person is not...
Important lesson to be learned here i think

    Happy all is well OP
