Trying to find a wide cycling shoe

    Hi guys,

I'm particularly wide feet, and my current Northwave shoes cause me numbness and eventually pain from cycling in them for long periods.

Can anybody recommend me some extra wide cycling shoes?

I know Lake do a 'w' (wide) version of there cycling shoes, but the UK distributer doesn't stock them.. so none of the shops carry them, or can order them in.

So if nobody can advise where online I can get Lake Tx312w shoes (tried Wiggle, CRC, bike24, Rose etc), can anybody recommend shoes that work for people with duck shaped feet.

    Thanks,
    -B

Sidi do a wide version of most of their shoes - look for ones where the word "Mega" is mentioned.

I think Shimano shoes are probably wider than most european ones at least. They're widely available in local bike shops so try them on. Bear in mind that the numbness may not be due to the shoe fit, it could be to do with cleat position.

Shimano r087s are wide and they also do a wide version if you have massive plates. Remember to order 1 size up in shimano

I've had problems in the past with specialized, sidi etc due to wide feet. I find the northwave shoes really comfortable, I've got the Typhoon Evo shoes at the moment and absolutely no complaints.

I have fairly wide feet and the best fitting ones were Shimano R215 Carbon SPD Road Shoes in a wide size(http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9496 since discontinued on here). But the best thing is to go to a bricks and mortar shop and try lots on, even if you end up buying online. What one person thinks is a very wide shoe might still be to narrow for you.

Another thing is what some people consider wide feet can just be bad arches causing the foot to flatten in the shoe and get pinched at the sides. A good orthotic insole can fix this to a degree. Just a thought.

Wiggle's own brand DHB are quite wide, fit me fine and I was always a G or H width when I was a kid

OP, if you hold fire for a few days I have a pair of these in the post and can let you know how they are. I have very, very wide feet so if they are a good fit for me I reckon they'll be good on anyone except a Hobbit.

I currently have a pair of Scattante shoes that make my feet go numb and I reckon it's all down to the width.

Please do report back, I took a stanly knife to the both sides of each shoe to make more space in the toe box, so that should keep my feet alive for a few more weeks until I can figure out a solution.

Sorry to piggyback this thread, but I too suffer from fee pain cause by cramps- but it is caused by not being able to flex my toes because I use a rigid cycling shoe. I'm looking for a more flexible shoe compatable with spd's. Does anyone use rigid shoes like these and would they help to counteract the problem?

Not sure floppy soles are going to help.

Happy toes need wiggle room i.e. sufficient space in the toe box area above the toe.

For hotspot-related issues, thicker, better shaped insoles may help but you need to have sufficient room in the shoe to start with.

They're not really floppy. They are just more flexible than ordinary shoes. Current shows have plenty of space. I get the cramps in the top of my foot. When I unclip and wiggle the whole foot a bit it clears it up. Was reading on Livestrong just now where others have the same problem and they are recommending more flexible shoes. Might just give these a try.

You might give Hennessy's cycles in Fermoy, Co, Cork a ring they have a good stock of Lake 401 shoes. Apparently he can get the wide fitting version.

+1 on the Shimano. They are supposed to be a naturally wider shoe but some models have specifically wide versions. They did the job for me

Just an update on this, I got the shoes over 2 weeks ago now and am delighted with them. The first week I got them, I did 2 x 40k spins. yesterday i did a 100k spin and the increase in comfort is immence. I have zero foot pain and am not continually clipping out to stretch my foot as I'm cycling.
    Happy days.

I also have an update on the Sidi Megas, I've done a few 60-70K spins on them now and they are great.
