NCT / VRT and a friend in the North

Have heard stories of NCT centres and VRT on old cars - one chap was turned away because his 'domestic bill' was 7 months old, another brought a 'project' car on a trailer to be told it had to be driven into the centre, when he returned and drove it in he was told it needed all it's interior fitted :mad::mad:

As far as I can see, the best way to deal with NCT is to re-register your UK import in the North with a Northern enthuiast until you have the car running 100% for the NCT inspection !! ;);)

Gas, people are willing to pay €xxx to import a car and the agents of the state are turning them away :P:P

You are supposed to register it within 7 days of importing it, or at max 30days, after that 'penalties' click in. Now if your purchase is a bag of bones then unlikely will you be able to drive it into the NCT and so the 'penalties' start mounting up which is an unjust anomaly of the NCT re VINVET cars.
ONE way is to just get the logbook off the UK owner and hold it til you're ready to declare it - then apply to the DVLA for a V582(?) Cert of permanent export in your name. That date will be within the 7 days so you'll be alright.
BUT, if as in 2 recent cases the V582 is over a month old then the NCT will penalise you so it would be better to register to a friendly enthuiast in the North, THEN, when your ready to declare it 'buy' it back off him and you get all the paperwirk that keeps the NCT happy.:D:D

If the Dept of the Enviroment / NCT weren't so pig-headed then things would just be easier

:)"I want to declare my VinVet car" ,

:)"Give me the UK logbook and €200 - now here's your new Irish reg and logbook, Thank you !

How will they know what date you imported it?

They do say don't register it until it's roadworthy, I don't know how strict they are on this but I'd imagine with older cars they'd be more sympathetic.

Only a roadworthy vehicle can be presented for VRT/rereg, hence the requirement for an MOT or a roadworthiness check.

I take cars to be cleared on a regular basis. I oftan have them for several months before I clear them. There has never been any issue with the N.C.T. official who clears them, so long as all the paper work is in order. I have never been queried as to why I did not clear it earlier. In fact I have always found them helpful, they just get in with the job. A car does not have to be up to M.O.T./ N.C.T. pass standard to get it cleared, so long as it is capable of been driven to the N.C.T. centre so as to verify the Vin. No.:):)

BBSRS, they will know the date of importation from the FERRY ticket. However, if you bought a U.K. Reg car that is already here, all you need is a reciept from the seller, the date of importation does not come into it.

Seems nudge nudge to me ;););) - so drive my yoke to the NCT , provide all the 'paper' ;) they require and they'll reg it ? Seems like the old days

Capri, there is no nudge, nudge, once you have all the paperwork that they require, they process it. However they cant give you a price for the V.R.T. it is not on thier computor system, they heve to contact Customs in Rosslaire to get the amount of V.R.T. due, though we all know it is E200.

It's illegal to buy a foreign reg. from anyone other than a registered motor dealer, and at that the dealer must pay the VRT before the buyer takes possesion.

With regard to a receipt, a sign on the wall in the NCT/VRT office in
Blarney says " If you do not have a receipt write one yourself".

yes but you cant RELY on the regulations being bent when re-registering. The fact is you are not allowed to sell a foreign reg car in Ireland, you do have to make that NCTS appointment within 7 days and complete within 30, you do need the car to be roadworthy and you do need the receipt and ferry ticket date. That these rules can be circumvent doesn't mean you always will be able to and the more they are flounted, the more likely it is the rules will be tightened to the detriment of us all..

Receipt as said , write it yourself . Ferry ticket not necessary if you say you bought it in NI . You're not circumventing the regs by doing this you are complying with them. Where is the problem for anyone if you tick the boxes and give them what they want. You're not applying for citizenship for an illegal immigrant just registering a car and paying an ample fee for the service.

What do you do if they* then show that they know it WASN'T bought in the North and had been in fact spotted driving round for the past x no of months?

    * Customs rather than NCTS f course.

If you're driving round without having duty paid you take the risk so pay the fine but in the case of not being able to clear a car in 7 days because it's not roadworthy a made up receipt shouldn't be an issue . As for a record of the date it entered the country being on record which would only happen if it was driven in and in that case it must be roadworthy so should be cleared especially a classic seen as its only €200 vrt.
