Connecting Sky tv to a saorview tv

I thought I would find loads of info on this online as I assumed many have come across this problem. But so far I am struggling to get an answer. Perhaps it is so simple- any help appreciated.

Bought a digital tv saorview ready for the auld lad for his kitchen. Currently he has an old tv there that picks up rte via the aerial on the roof but also has sky tv through the sky box in the sitting room.

Having replaced the tv with the digital tv, he now has all the rte channels including the new digital ones. However, he doesnt have sky tv. I cant seem to figure out why. The sky feed is not showing up on a scan. From my limited research so far it appears that the sky tv may be an analogue signal and the digital tv cant pick this up.

Anyone any ideas on this and more importantly how to rectify it?

Yes, the Sky box RF output is an analogue signal. The tv should have an analogue tuner, you might have to scan separately for analogue channels.

Connect to the tv via a scart lead and then go to AV and it sky will appear. If its the normal analogue connection it will show up with the other analogue channels near the end of the channel list.

Do an auto scan, the tv should find the analogue channels inc the sky feed from the front room and digital channels also.
There may be a button on the remote to switch between A and D, or the analogue channels may be behind the digital in their listing eg..5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5
If its a Panasonic tv and theres a tv button on the remote, press it once or twice to toggle between AV analogue or Saorview.
Play around and you'll get sorted.

Yes the lead from the Sky box need to go directly into the back of the new TV. Make sure the Sky box is on. Then do a scan on the TV for analogue channels.

To switch from Sky to Saorview you may need to press the "AV" button on the remote or turn off and on the Saorview box.

Thanks lads. Is it possible that the TV can only scan for digital channels and wont pick up the analogue channels?

Mentions NICAM sound in the specs. That could indicate the presence of an analogue tuner. I'm not sure of all that NICAM was/is used for, but it's definitely part of analogue broadcasts in this part of the world (though NICAM is a digital format).

I would assume that the aerial from the roof is plugged into the rf input on the sky box and is sent to the other room from rf 2 out and controlled by a magic eye.
What i would try is to remove the aerial from the sky box rf in socket temporarily and then with the skybox switched on do a full rescan and see if the tv now picks up sky as that will be the only signal available to it.
If it does then you will have to change the skybox rf output to a different channel number.

The Sky box RF output/aerial setup worked alright with the old tv, according to OP.

The tuners on these are so easily overloaded, any previous setup does not apply.
Best to check for sky rf output without any other signals present.

There may be a button on your remote which toggles between Analogue and digital on my Philips dig tv it's a button near the top labeled "TV", some tv's seem to have all the channells dig and analogus listed sequentially, my tv hsa to be switched from dig to analogue and back to dig etc,

The Alba tvs only have a digital tuner, hence why there so cheap.....and u wont be able to tune in a skybox that is coming out on an analog frequency.

    Thanks all for your comments.

I have been away the last while so not able to try out some of the suggestions above until now but the right answer is Steveon's in that the tv does not possess an analogue tuner. Argos has since added that to the specification to note that it does not have an analogue tuner.

Dont want to splash out too much more on a tv- i see a few other models for 30/40 quid more but none seem to specify if they have an analogue tuner. Take for example the one below:

The Triax Unilink is intended to solve the problem of delivering analogue RF signals to tvs without analogue tuner.

Seems to be quite new, no idea of cost.

The Unilink looks similar to the Global DTA unit.
