Hey all, I am new here and have tried to find the info I am looking for as I am sure it has already been covered somewhere but I just ain't come across it yet...basically I drive a 02 1.4 honda civic and after noticing a whirring/horrid noise that stops when the clutch is pressed in and that is progressively getting worse I got it diagnosed as being the input shaft bearing...noice big expensive job for me! Has anyone had/dealt with this problem before and if so what did they do? Second hand gear box? Sell the car stating fault and leave it? Or does anyone recommend anyone who specialises in this...basically I do not want/can't pay a fortune but I want my lil baby sorted, this is the only problem I have ever had with her and it is a common occurence in all Ep models, a fault from Honda...any input at all would be hugely appreciated :)

Maybe try getting the box reconditioned, be as good as new and better price wise on the pocket ?

Thats another idea alright...say Honda would charge a bomb though, do you recommend anywhere else? I know it is definitely a bearing in the gearbox (the input shaft bearing, could be worse when I get it dropped though) but would it be worth changing the clutch too even though it seems to be fine? The only quote for sorting the problem I have got so far is 395e, that's replacing the bearing, and I don't know if that is good or bad...I remember an old mate of mine blew their gearbox (twice) and got it fixed for 250e so hard to tell...also I'm female so always have to be on alert that I ain't being robbed :) but I have a feeling this will cost me either way...oh well

Unfortunately that is a common fault on that model Civic. My father had one of these Civics a good few years ago and the same problem was in the early stages just before he sold it.

I would not go down the second hand gearbox route as chances are the second hand gearbox could develope the same problem soon after being fitted. Better off getting the bearing replaced in the existing box or get a reconditioned box altogether. Also don't even bother bringing a 10 year old car to a main dealer, plenty of good indy garages out there that would be able to do this job and don't charge main dealer labour rates.

I had this exact same problem in January with an 03 1.4 Civic. I went for a reconditioned box in the end and used Naas Gearbox Centre on a recommendation from someone here.

I can't fault them, the price for mine was around €600 but they were offering free fitting at the time if you had the work done at their garage. They also quoted to replace just teh bearings, which was less money.

    Hope this helps.

Yeh I'm not pushed on going second hand especially with it being such a common problem,I can get the bearing replaced for 395e...or with clutch for 600e...either are still a bit pricey for me at the min though :( And I only rang Honda to see what they would say about the problem but they just said to bring it in, they wouldnt answer what I was asking :p They would surely rob me!

How bad was yours? Mine has been making noise for a while and at first I thought it was the clutch release bearing but I'm now positive it's gearbox bearings and I only realized how bad it was when my mate was driving my car the other day, the noise from when your outside sounds sore :( but it's gotten worse so I really need it sorted...just getting the time and dollers is the problem now... So did you replace your clutch and flywheel too?? I've been quoted the same price by euro gearbox in Drumcondra and that is including the clutch, which is just a bit closer to me but I'm still undecided on what to do. How long did they have your car? Euro clutch said they would give me somthing to drive home in so I guess it takes a while

Ok now another mechanic mate says no, it's my clutch release bearing for defo even though another mechanic said no it's my Input shaft bearing...for defo..............confusion :/

Mine was making noise for a while but I only did anything about it when it started to become loud enoughto hear over the radio (not good I know).

I didn't have the clutch replaced, but I did have the whole gear box done not just the bearings.

    The work took two days.

Mine ain't that loud...yet haha but it's not a nice sound  did it go away when the clutch was pressed in? Once I press about 2/3rds down the noise goes away.

Where did you get it done and how much? Were you confused over it being the clutch release or the input shaft bearing?? I was due to get it sorted Monday, we thought it was the clutch release but another lad in the garage wanted a look first and then said no, its my IPS, said he has seen the same problem before and I said F it I'll just sell it but I changed my mind since and want it fixed but today another mechanic said NO NO NO its your clutch release, I nearly had a row with him :p and now he said he will do the release bearing, clutch and check my gearbox for 300e?? Even though I'm still convinced it's my IPS and wasnt going to bother with a new clutch if it was......

If only I had the strength I would have become a mechanic myself!!
