Funny, I was looking at these last week, and stumbled accross one on Ebay that was about €40, that gave you the ability to remotely kill the engine as well.

For the life of me,I can't find the bloody listing again.

    It was similar to this one;

Killing the engine while driving in GPS in a big no no, especially if the car is being driven on a motorway, u kill the engine and the car come's to a stop in the fast lane, could lead to a major pile up, cause all the thief will do is get out and leave car, its not his problem.

    Or..
you kill the engine and he gets toasted behind the wheel which would be win/win..

Chances are though that he'll just have a jamming device.. they're just as cheap as the GPS trackers and are often sold on the same websites... I know if I were in the theft business I'd have one in my pocket. just in case..

Do you not need to buy a sim card for use with this and then be met with the ongoing costs of data usage each month for tracking?

As far as I could see,Cormie, from the ones I looked at, they made a big deal about there being no further charges beyond buying a sim card and keeping credit on it.
Now, there are also vehicle tracking companies that you sign up to and pay an ongoing subscription to.Can't see the point in this if the €40 tracker off Ebay does the same thing, ie let you establish a geofence for you vehicle and alert you by text when that fence has been breached etc.

Yes you need to buy a sim...but the one I have doesn't use any data (if I don't want it to)...I can just ring my car and it will reply with a text message with a link to a google map of it's current location. (not requiring any data)
If I activate the data mode, it will tell me the street name and I can track the car in real time on the laptop (which would use data)

Ah yeah ok that makes sense.

I was thinking to have it in the vans and I'd be able to track them regularly and maybe even let customers track them too. Maybe with such usage I'd be better off with a sub from a company, just not sure if I'd get the use from the required hassle of more bills and everything.

Using the text message mode, I only need to top up with €5 every 6 months...works out very cheap for tracking.

Not sure what the make is but it's a G204.
Yes I fitted it myself...if you've ever fitted a car radio then you should be fine. (In saying that I didn't bother wiring the remote engine shutdown, panic/reset button, alarm integration)...I just wired up the basic unit so it works as a tracker and the mic so I can listen into the car.

Fletch, how are you finding the Tracker? Would you recommend it. Sounds good for 50 quid

yeh no problems whatsoever. I wud definitely recommend it as a cheap alternative to an expensive monitored one. My only issue so far was that meteor seems to turn the sim off after a year if the sim does not make an outbound call even though there was credit and it had sent a text a couple of days before. I removed the sim popped it into my phone, made a call and all was back working then. But that's more an issue with meteor than the tracker but something to bear in mind when deciding where to locate the unit.

The €40 jobs don't come with any aerials, so signalling can be very poor. I had one of them and it wouldn't pick up the signal unless it had clear view of the sky.

I picked up another one for about €100 and it's much better. Same type of device and works the same way, but it comes with gps and gsm aerial. Mine is hidden in the dash with the aerials in the roof, peeking out at the windows. It always has signal and topped up by €5 months ago...reminds me...I need to add credit to it. Here's a link to the same type of tracker I got. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Vehicle-GSM-GPS-GPRS-Tracker-Remote-Oil-Electricity-Cut-Tracking-Device-Personal-/230769000727?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item35bae78117

    Hi folks,

I recently bought a TK-102 mini tracker from eBay, I went through the set up procedure and rang the sim and just got back 00000000000 0000000000 coordinates!! The blue led light is suppose to flash every 3 seconds to say I has GPS signal which it does but still getting no gps info?? Is this faulty or am I doing something wrong??

    Rookie
