Mondeo Key worn!

I have two keys for my Mondeo. 1 with the central locking buttons on it and a spare without the central locking buttons. Spare also does not start the car, only the main key does.

Problem I have is the teeth on the main key are pretty worn and I have to jiggle it in the ignition to start, it’s getting pretty bad now, I can see me not being able to start the car soon!!

    Any budget advice?

You need to get new keys cut and then possibly an ignition barrel.

The keys wear and then they wear out the inside of the barrell so a new key may not even solve your problem.

If it was me Id get a new key cut from a key cutting place and not a main dealer. They can sometimes cut open the old key and insert the chip from it into the new key blank which has a cut out for the chip.Saves you the cost of programming.

Try the new key if the barrel is still sticky you have no option to get a barrel from a dealer and fit that.

Spare may not have immobilizer chip fitted. You could buy a new head for your remote key and get it cut. I paid 15 for a spare key for my mondeo. That was a non imo key supplied and cut by my local locksmith

Thanks for the replies lads. The spare key has the blue top to it, looks like maybe it has lost its programme. Is Ford dealer only way to go. They quoted me 130 for a replacement main key!!

How much just for the re programme?

If the key is for a 02-05 Mondeo, all the electronics (including the immobiliser) are in the remote, which can be removed from the "mechanical" part of the key - you can prise them apart with a screwdriver (as you would if you were changing the battery in the remote).

Ford main dealers will do a new replacement for the "mechanical" part of the key for about 20 euro. You then use your own remote electronics part, and you don't have to re-programme anything. Easy !

I've heard of people starting fords with the spare key by holding the main key right beside the barrel as well so the imob chip is where it needs to be.

theres a place on the naas road I think, possibly called auto key, which are pretty good
