Always thought an animal that you could finish mainly on good grass/silage was worth a lot in this country ...and next spring when meal prices are still sky high it could be worth a fortune ....

they are my dads, he is more or less retired, we have a herd of 50 angus at the minute, could be using some of that ground for dairying... will keep 5 or 6 cows.... i hate sucklers with a passion:( too hard to handle and very agressive at calving, also afraid of my dad with them too at calving... have to scan them in the morning which will take twice as long as if we where scanning the dairy cows

If you are selling weanlings/stores before finishing then by all means at the moment they are making good money.

However on a price per kilo basis angus cattle are far too expensive to make a profit if you are finishing even including the bonus, they just don't have the frame for the necessary weight gain. I much prefer cheap Frisians or if paying higher continentals and only bulls, steers and heifers aren't worth feeding.

If next summer is like this one it will be difficult finishing anything on grass.

The prob with Angus as I see it is the calves just are not as valuable. Need to take them all the way to beef to see a return

Breed originates from the moutains in France and are a hardy breed.
What people like about them is that they do have a bigger pelvic area so can take harder calving bulls. Do have a poor reputation for docility but i'd argue that may have more to do with how often they are herded infield by fella's but coincide that SI and CH are more docile on avg.

ya they are, their very hairy. beef cattle. My dads a farmer & bout 70% of our cattle are all salers, doesnt give him much bother. no trouble at all with calving. Hes always praising them. lm no expert on them so have a look at this! http://www.irishsalers.com/

funny thing this year the aax heifers calves made more than the bulls, apparently the best beef animal is a charolais bullock off an angus/ fr cow.
