THE Army's elite special forces unit, the Ranger Wing, has been mobilised for its toughest mission yet – tackling Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.

Such is the international reputation of the Ranger Wing that the EU made a formal request to the Government to provide the troops several months ago.

The unit has been secretly training for the mission all year, working closely with the Navy and Air Corps.

The Defence Forces has dismissed as "pure speculation" reports that around 30 members of the elite Army Ranger Wing are to be deployed to tackle Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.

    I read this
However, Commandant Denis Hanly said the mission posed huge logistical and operational challenges.

    And I laughed

Its 30 troops .... 30 f**king troops. God forbid they have to consider moving 300.

FFS may as well just come out and say "International missions nah its all just to hard"

You realize it would probably take more then two of our ships to house 30 rangers? So it's more like deploying nearly 120 out at sea if you include crew members, plus fuel and ammunition resupplies for the ships.

Long term deployments at sea are not as easy as deployments on land.

Was it not to put the ARW on an EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Vessel?

"It is understood that the contingent will involve up to 30 Rangers, including three six-man specialist assault teams, who will be based in a "friendly" country for the duration of a four- to six-month deployment."

From what I've been told P61 (which will be commissioned next year) will be the ship that will take the rangers down on patrols around Somalia.

No. It's all rumour and hearsay. Just like the article at the start of the thread.

Do we not have a 'Triple lock' system to be satisfied before any Irish soldiers are ever deployed ? Govt, UN and president/dail ? I think...

43 commando are not the SAS.

ARW are the irish equivelant of the SAS.

They take part in counter terrorist and intel gathering exercises both here and overseas and therefore it makes sense that their faces aren't plastered all over the media or in the public domain.

The triple lock is releveant for deployments above a certain size....
    Triple lock consists of

    UNSC Approval
    Government Approval
Approval by the majority of the Dail

There was no comparison between the two. Morpheus was stating that the ARW are Ireland's equivalent of the SAS, nothing more so don't be interpreting it in your own way in a subtle effort to play down the units abilities.
