    Hello

and forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong area and I'm sure it's all been asked before but I need help to choose a PVR.

I have a standard Chorus box that gives the regular basic TV Channels. I want to simply record and then watch on my Laptop with VLC or MPC.

Can some recommend a cheap n cheerful box that can do this that works well with a basic set up. There is a TV Star TV t1010 unit in Xtra-Vision but I cannot get any info from the staff members regarding Encryption.

I assume to understand that it will record only on a FAT32 formatted drive, The TVStar website gives no info if the data recorded is encrypted or not just that it will output in a .PVR format. My TV has a built in PVR and records fine but I cannot view the data on my Laptop at a later stage.

Can anyone recommend a cheap n cheerful box that can let me record RTE on NTFS/FAT32 discs and then be able to watch on my Laptop with VLC?

    Thanks,
    Thom.

What is the exact model of Chorus box? Have you asked UPC if they can supply a PVR?

Do you want to record the UPC based digital channels or do you want to record Irish Saorview channels from an ordinary aerial?

Also this is in the Satellite section, do you have a dish and if so what do you use this for?

    Hi Guys,

    Thx for the replies.

I don't have the exact model no. of the chorus box at hand as I am not at home, it is old and no I have not asked UPC for a PVR. I am thinking of getting rid of UPC and simply using the FTA. I am by no means a massive TV addict, I hardly watch anything, but if I do, I wanna record and watch later on my Laptop. I don't want any PC/Laptop related TV recorder device.

The RTE Channels via an ordinary aerial will do as long as they are Digital - my TV is mpeg4 and picks up the Saorview, I also have a Televes bog standard FTA box which gives basic channels. I have a second TV and it also picks up soarview, despite it not even plugged into any aerial. (I live on the 7th floor of an apartment block ) this TV has no PVR or USB. Yes I have a dish and it is used for fta I guess. It came with the apartment I rent.

The main TV with a PVR built in records a single .PVR and data stored inside a.BIN container only on a FAT32 formatted device. As you can see below the data is encrypted, thus spoiling the chance to view on my Laptop at a later stage.
