Are the CPA being a little misleading in their advertising?

Just to preface this by saying i have no issue with CPAs, both my Dad and brother are both members,

however the current adverts on newstalk strike me as a little dishonest. THey say that CPA is the best known qualification world wide seems to be trading off the american CPA designation to my mind.

    Or am i mistaken :pac:

Until I moved to Ireland last year I'd never heard of it...

Well having just read their bit on CPA International, I'd have to say they are being economical with the truth at best...

In the end this kind of thing will do them more damage than good.

    They are a little.

It'd be like opening a self built restaurant in Ireland, calling it McDonalds and then saying... Eat at McDonalds, the biggest fastfood brand in the world.

You couldn't of course as McDonalds would come down on you like a ton of bricks. The term CPA is not globally protected, nor does anyone have the power or inclination to protect it.

Some US firms when setting up in Ireland for the first time will specifically look for the CPA qualification. The CPA's they are looking for would be very rare in Ireland, and if I was applying for these jobs, I'd point out within the first paragraph the CPA status in Ireland. As I imagine any non CPA applicant would. It's not a mistake, that I know of, made by more established US firms.

Its not dishonest, it is simply stating a fact. What they have not done is explain that they are not linked directly to the US CPA Brand. I do agree that they should explain themselves more on it.

ACA are also economical in their publications when they say that the chartered accountancy qualification guarantees you an employee who is without repute an excellent candidate. I have worked with a large number of chartered accountants who in all honesty have been sh1t at there jobs but hang on to their qualification as if its a right of access. ACA are very good at generalisation too.

Hire the man/woman/transgender, don't hire the qualification.

I am a CPA and I am proud of it, I have 12 years experience in a medium sized practice and I guarantee you I would be head and shoulders above any ACA who has the same experience as me in a similar sized practice.

    That is quite a statement

I agree, thinks it's very misleading.

As far I knew it was a completely different qualification.

Obviously the marketing and self promotion aspect of the CPA syllabus is better than ACA!!

    No.

It is being moderated. Otherwise the thread is just going to turn into a rant by your good self about the merits of joining CPA versus other accountancy organisations.

This is a thread about the recent radio advert about CPA. Keep to the subject or post somewhere else.

    Kind Regards
