Hi, I am looking to get either of the above for our son (8 yrs) for Christmas. He is big into his music, but not sure which one to get. I saw one with radio, games, mp4 etc but it said not compatible with itunes. If I were to get this one for him, could we still download/purchase for it, or is it just copying and transferring from files already on the computer. Have an ipod with itunes myself, but really have no idea what to do for him. Any advice I would really appreciate, thanks.

Well it all depends, do you purchase music via iTunes? Are you happy to use iTunes?

The new iPod Nano has (as did the old one) a radio too and can play through the car via Bluetooth also.

Alternatively, with a regular MP3 player, it's usually just a case of copy files to the folder and he's not tied in to using the one machine and account to enable him to put music on his iPod.

As I said, depends what suits you's better...

thanks Kong, I rarely purchase from itunes!!

I suppose an mp3 might be better for him as I or OH will only be downloading the music for him.

Is there any particular one I should look at, want something durable and with longevity. Thanks again for info :)

Well I've never bought anything other than an iPod so I'm not very familiar at all with other MP3 players. Sorry. :)

But you might find something here:

Get a Sansa Clip Zip. Pretty durable (though no harm in getting a protective case for it to be sure) & if you shop around you can get them for a reasonable price. They take micro SD cards so easy to upgrade the storage. The radio is decent enough too. Not sure if it's compatible with iTunes as I don't use that but plenty of other means of purchasing music online that would work - 7digital for instance. I use a combination of drag & drop or syncing via Windows Media Player, both very easy to do.

Last question, will these mp3 players work on any docking station, as in do they have the same port on the end as the ipods do? Thanks for all yer help guys.

They should come with a standard USB connection.

The iPod port is specific to Apple.

I've seen these in a couple of places around Dublin, they get pretty good reviews online in terms of sound quality (haven't actually heard them myself though) & I'd say it'd be the sort of thing kids would love. There's other designs available as well as the pig if that didn't suit.
