thinking of joining either Ring of Kerry Golf club or Kenmare Golf club, live about 20 minutes from Kenmare , Ring of Kerry is €240 annual membership while Kenmare is €290. I have played both courses so any thoughts on which is best to join ,

Kenmares annual sub is €545, unless you bring two new members with you when you join, and then it's €290 for 3 years as long as all 3 renew their membership.
Anyway the Ring is a better golf course and a more interesting challenge and the €240 covers your club and GUI sub, so for me it's a no brainer, the Ring gets the nod.

Prefer ROK myself have played both only a few times but I do find the holes across the road in Kenmare fairly weak and can be wet if I remember correctly
Nothing like the old part of the course which is much more scenic and enjoyable
Only downside for ROK is its a bit of a pull and does wear you out a bit

The Ring of Kerry has also some arrangement with the Skellig Bay Golf Club in Waterville where you get free golf during the week and a superb course in Paris called Clement Adare (owned by an Irishman who is also involved in the R of K) which also allows for reciprocal golf. Although the course can get wet it is still a fantastic layout with absolutely incredible views. If I lived anywhere near it I would not hesitate to join. So a second nod from me.

I would go with Kenmare, ROK is a hard slog to be honest.

I would go with the ROK, Kenmare is dull and boring to be honest.

Played kenmare today and imo there is no contest. The ROK wins hands down. The greens in Kenmare are like pitch and putt greens, its a real character less golf course imo. Whereas the greens in the ROK are top class and the course is a much better track than kenmare

I disagree with the consenus here. I think ROK is too tricked up and too hilly. Some really stupid holes on it too. Kenmare also has a nicer club house and more of a club feel to it (if that makes any sense). It's also handy being right beside the town if you want to grab nosh after a round.

The greens in Kenmare were hollow cored and sanded during last week, so how you can comment on them without taking that into consideration clearly shows only one thing, i.e.you don't what you're talking about.

In what do you think the Ring is stupid and tricked up?
The clubhouse in Kenmare is dated and cramped and the general consensus is that it needs to be expanded to include catering facilities and to include a function room, as well as updating both locker rooms, on the other hand all those facilities are in place in the ring and you don't need to go to town for hot food after your round, but maybe you like cosy, rustic and old world facilities, personally I prefer modern facilities and a course that will present a challenge and excites every time you play it.

What has the greens being hollow cored got with me saying they are tiny greens? whether they were sanded or not , they are poor greens.

It's completely subjective but, I don't the blind holes and one par 3 in particular is just plain ridiculous (the one with the big drop).

The point I was making about Kenmare being beside the town is that you can stroll into town and have your pick of restaurants/pubs. It has a small membership so I'm not sure if they need to expand their clubhouse. and I've never been in there when it's been close to full. Just my personal opinion of course.
