Where to stay in Brittany/Normandy?

We are family of 4. We will be taking the car. Our preference would be for a rural village, inland or coastal. A cottage would be ideal. We have never holidayed in France and I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, some little gem of a place they can recommend. Thanks Ado
