Chepaer alternative to the Surly Pacer

Hi all,

Currently looking around for a new bike. It will be used primarily for commuting, to work, into town, out and about etc. Also for longer cycles (about 150K) maybe a couple of times a year.

I want it to have that old school road bike look.

I have my eye on the Surly Pacer but it's crept away from what I was willing to pay. It comes in at just over €1400.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar looking bike to the Pacer but that comes in at a lower price?

I was originally looking at fixies as there seems to be a lot of them that match the look I want but from asking around they wouldn't be suitable for the longer cycles which is one of my requirements.

There's also the kona honky tonk http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=honky_tonk which I think goes for about 800e most of the time.

There's also this cinelli on wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cinelli-gazzetta-della-strada-2012/ although they only have the small sizes available.

Finally there's the option of buying an old frameset and building it up with some nice new (or lightly used) wheels, groupset and finishing kit (or just buying a full second hand bike).

Condor Classico looks lovely but over budget for a complete bike.

Second hand is probably your best bet. Why pay new money for an old design?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies, very useful. Currently leaning towards the juicer out of all the options given. I like the cinelli as well.

Do you intend to use a rack?

I'm pretty sure the Juicer doesn't have upper rack mounts on the seat stays. It seems to have mounting points for mudguards at the bottom, whether these are designed to take a loaded rack I'm not sure.

These are not insurmountable problems but they would be nice to have on a bike you intend to use as a workhorse.

If your in Dublin and are between 5'10 and 6'2 you can have a try of my charge juicer, time and location permitting, I took the mudguards of mine though.
