Any advice on how to get rid of a water stain on a ceiling, well dried out now (I doubt that regular emulsion will rid it??)

    TIA

There is a special paint you can get to cover it, your local paint shop should have it..

Use oil based undercoat first or french polish/shellac will work too. You want to form a barrier over the stain to stop it bleeding through the emulsion coat.
I've never had to use those (invariably) expensive coatings for moderate staining.

Had the exact same problem myself a few weeks ago. Got a spray of stain block. 2 coats of that over the water mark and once it's dry just paint with regular ceiling paint. I got this one in B&Q for around a tenner.

    +1 for the Polycell.

2 lights sprays over the stain at around 12 inches of a distance and leave to dry for a few hours.

Then a fresh lick of paint and its goodbye water stain forever.:)

I applied a coat of gloss paint over the stained patch. Then used normal ceiling paint over that. No problems since.:D

Yeah one more recommendation for oil/solvent based undercoat from me - cheaper option, and has worked a charm for me on a number of occasions.

Any oil based paint should do the trick. Any time I encounter this I use two coats of whatever oil based paint I happen to have to hand. Then paint over with the emulsion and you're done.
