Humax Foxsat HDR + USB DVB-T ?

Hello, I wonder does anyone know if this is a possible combination: using the USB socket on a Humax Foxsat HDR (which I'm considering) to add one of those USB stick DVB-T tuners to receive saorview?
    Can they interface together?
Could the Humax see this as a third tuner and possibly show an EPG for saorview and allow recording?
Please don't suggest a combination box solution, unless it offers the full seven-day EPG functionality of a freesat.

Nice idea, fairly certain it wouldn't work. Afaik the USB ports are just for file transfer and software upgrades.

Linux based boxes can give you 7 day EPGs for Sat/DTT. Some have mixed Sat/DTT tuners, others like Vu+ use USB DVB-T.

Where do they get the 7 day EPG info for the sat?

The use the existing Freesat or Sky EPG datastreams on particular transponders i.e. over the air.

They can also be configured to download from the net if you prefer.

So there is no content protection on the Freesat or Sky EPG streams? Or there is but it's been cracked?

There is no protection on them. This page is discussing importing them into tvheadend.

Could you link to some of these Linux based boxes of which you speak? BTW what box is that screenshot taken from?:D

Is there any place where one of these Linux boxes can be bought, pre programmed/loaded with the two epg's so that it looks exactly like the one in this picture ? In other words, for those of us who are not computer whizz kids, can one of these be purchased and out of the box, just plug it in, hook up the aerial cable and sat cable and Bobs your uncle ?

Thanks a lot Apogee. This sounds intriguing. While I'm technically literate, this digital TV is new to me, so I'd be very grateful if you could expound a bit more on these Linux boxes.

There no place that sells the pre-configured that I know. However, it's really not that difficult to get the basic system up and running (Install firmware, download drivers for usb stick, scan sat channels and arrange them as desired) - plenty of people willing to give advice here on boards.

The screenshot is taken from a VU+ Duo system (2x sat tuners) with a USB DVB-T dongle for Saorview.

Thread with lots of info on Vu+ here:

Other boxes include Dreambox, or the recent addition to market Amiko Alien

    Thanx for that Apogee.

Thanks for that. What level of functionality do you get with that EPG Apogee? Do you have to set timers, or is it like freesat where you just select the program you want to record and you're done? Also what about series link?

You show the Vu+. Would the same functions be available on something like a GM spark triplex or a Amiko Alien 2 for example? And if you have any opinion on these boxes I'd be delighted to hear them?

The Vu+ seems a bit beyond my budget, as I'm only getting into this satellite game!

The EPG and the timers are integrated. Highlight a program in grid ...

...and click the green button to add timer ...
    2epg.jpg

... which you can further modify to repeat daily, weekly etc.

Proper Series Link is only available on Freesat and Sky boxes (and some HTPC setups AFAIK). On Linux boxes, there is a half-way between a standard timer and proper Series Link called 'Autotimer'. Autotimer works by searching the EPG grid for any matching programmes with the same title (on same channel, within specified time parameters).

    Autotimer for 'Féilte 2012'

...further settings refinement (e.g. how many times to repeat etc)

I don't know those boxes to comment. All I can say is for any Linux box, don't get too carried away with the hardware specs. If the software/firmware isn't up to par, then the hardware will never reach its full potential.
