Mondeo Temperature Guage

The temperature guage on my 02 1.8 petrol Ford Mondeo barely reaches quuarter way up. If i stop with the engine on for a few minutes it reaches the normal half way but when I drive on it falls back again. My first thoughts were a stuck open thermostat but a friend (not a mechanic) says it could be a temperature sensor.

My question is, could it be a temperature sensor and is there a way of telling if its the sensor or thermostat. I recently changed the expansion tank because the old one was leaking if that would affect anything.

    Thanks in advance.

i had similar with my toyota, when car idling , or driving locally , temp was ok, bet when i went to motorway, temp gouge plunged to 1/4 of scale, took out thermostat, it was fully open... stuck thermostat. they are not expensive, and fair easy to change.

Thermostat is easy and cheap. Would be my first port of call.

Not so cheap, I just discovered they come with the housing and are 108 euro on micks garage. Does anybody know if a thermostat alone without the housing can be bought.
