Car advertised as 1 owner but sold 2 years ago to garage

I am looking at a luxury barge for weekends. I have seen 2 motor's listed as 1 owner, FSH, very low mileage (6k a year). Upon questioning the dealer in detail it turns out that the car was traded 2 years ago and has been flipped between various dealers.

The guy selling now says it has FSH and it is reg to his brothers garage. Upon questioning the dealer in detail again it turns out that it is not reg to the dealer either, or the last dealer, he thinks his brother has the car 6 months, but the car is still in the name of the original owner who sold it in feb 2010.

    Is this legal.

If this car has spent 2 year's in the trade getting flipped how are they able to sell between each other. They are offering a "comprehensive warranty", but got irate by my questions. They look like a reputable dealer so is this normal.

Car failed NCT on brake lines which they have the parts to replace, so he says it will have a full 2 year NCT, when I asked about this by full they mean the NCT was due last January 2012, so it's only NCT until Jan 2014. Car is taxed until next week.

In fairness i wouldn't classify a car being on a forecourt as an owner

No normally I wouldn't either, but 2 years with more than 3 dealers

What model car is it? If it is something with a large petrol engine then it would not be very desireable which means it wouldn't be uncommon for it to be passed around between the trade for that duration. Second hand luxo barges are not easy to sell in this country even back in the good times so I would not be surprised if it was lying there unsold for such a long time.

If its a guzzler it could have been sitting on the forecourt for quite a while. Compare the mileage to the last NCT cert if there is one. I know a gfew dealers who have sites around the city, the move cars between them so that they are not sitting on the one lot for too long, you'll know thwm cos they usually just have a portacabin on site and the salesman knows very little about cars.

It could be ok, in my experience if it drives fine it usually is fine.

If its around that long, either the car is wrong or the price is/was wrong.
Sitting up for 2 years won't have done it any favours either.

What about 6 dealers, see Big Brand Dealership this forum, sorry I don,t know how to link. I think, if it is reflected in the price, and you are made aware then ok,but not if otherwise.

No he described the car as a 1 owner car, low mileage. He Didn't say a word about anything else until he was asked specifically. Then he started getting thick.

I'd be interested to know how the dealership have been taxing the car if it's still in the original owners name. Only the registered owner can tax a car so if it's still in the name of the owner who sold it in 2010 I'd be asking a lot more questions.

If you've done an rf134 you can tax a car for 3 months as a dealer

Only found that out last week. To keep it taxed so it can be driven the dealer has probably been transferring it out of his dealer code to another dealer code, tax for 3 months and when it needs taxing again, transfer it to another dealer code.

Doesn't necessarily mean it's been passed around the trade, might have been the same sales guy driving it for the past 2 years but they have to keep transferring it to be able to keep it taxed.

I didn't think the dealer needed to have it taxed on a forecourt.

My concern is that for the last 2 years I have no idea who has driven the car. Also the car has FSH, 6 year old car with 26k on the clock.

Full service history seems to mean something completely different in Ireland.

It's wrong for me anyway. The salesman lied by omission.
