Well lads I'm late as usual but the weather really scuppered my plans this year, but I'm gonna try to get ten acres power harrowed and sown this week:eek::eek:. Just wondering did anyone reseed this year and what kind of price did you pay for grass seed.

55 was the cheapest for dirt seed that i heard of. 95 was the dearest quoted to me but the run for good seed was between 65-75.

Hmm how long does grass seed last for? I'm doing 10acres or so at the minute, and am going to do afew more in the spring, is it worth stocking up on it now if the price is going to rocket?

I'm getting what is suppose to be a very good mix of grazing/silage seed (good few of the other local farmers recommended it, it should suit our local soil and weather so), it has clover in it also for 75quid, I had to beat the local supply down from 80 though. Glanbia might be cheaper but I wouldn't trust that shower as far as I could throw them!

dont know how long it lasts but kno the germination rate decreases with time; open to correction here but if kept cool and dry should be ok as long as manufactured date was recent enough. i hav 7 bags for next year and they were manyfactured in may 2012...duno bout a spike but was told expect another 20 per bag.....but its a roumour....

76 a bag from a local guy or 78 a bag from DG.

I chickened out of reseeding a couple of weeks ago an threw some fodder rape out instead.

I reseeded earlier in the year and it was out of rotation for 14 weeks, due to weather delays.
Used Glanbia Extend. 3 grass varieties and clover.
Have to say I'm delighted with it since.
Even now, I'm still grazing it every 2 weeks as it is growing grass at an amazing rate. Older swards needing 30+ days to achieve same growth.
Costly, but well worth the effort if you are well-stocked. Couldn't manage it at all if stock-levels weren't high:D

Personally i'd prefer not to be waiting 5 months to graze new grass seeds

Bought all grass seed at the start of the year from liffeys for 55/bag and I dont like the rumour mill of 20/bag going on it  . I have completely gone away from ploughing/power harrow, its all direct drill now and I love it. have reseeded 2 paddocks this year 1 in May and other last month, I think lads around thought I was mad especially with the year but as PatQfarmer says its growing like mad now(the may grown stuff) was in it 6 weeks after sowing and looks like the stuff sown 3-4 weeks ago will be ready in another 2 or 3 weeks....worth every penny me thinks but I wonder at what price it becomes too expensive??

The price rise from 2011 to 2012 was already quite substantial!

why so? it went in after maize and the other option may have meant that I wouldnt have gotten it reseeded it till late April and a first grazing until the first of June. To me I got 4 months free grass which is worth an awful lot if you heavily stocked

This year I managed to bring the direct drilling grass time down to 24 days to when the last animal left the field of old grass and was back grazing the new grass and this was around the first of July when growth was poor. ideally we can get back in grazing under 30 days so our loss in rotation is minimal. I would consider seed to dear once it goes over 150 a bag :D. Quality grass seed is the cheapest input any farmer can buy

Last year one neighbour put in grass in april / May, which is the recommended time - did bad... Weather didn't come good.
Another neighbour put in grass in June, which is not recommended, wea, ther came great, sun and rain - it came on great.
I also saw a lad on my way to work putting in grass seed first week October, and it did very well...
So hard to say when is the right time given the weather we're getting....

the grass seeds last different lenghts of time. theres even a 12 month seed that is vigourous and will outgrow weeds. the general run of them last between 6-8 years.
