what can they say to you ? it says 5 seats on log book ,if he can get this why cant the rest of us ,it is taxed

    This is not legal.

There are a few vehicles out there that-at one point- were big enough to have enough room for 5 seats, a fixed bulkhead and a load area in the back.

The Kia Sedona was big enough to do this.

Then you had land cruiser vx100s. These needed the rear floor to be cut out and a new much lower floor installed, and the exhaust rerouted around the new box under the floor pan. It's a massive job, and a daunting one on a brand new machine.these were all the rage at one point, I think they changed the laws on crewcabs around 2005 or so.

    Here's one.

Now in order for that trooper to be legit, it would have needed extensive welding and some magic to make it big enough. I've never seen one that was actually within regulations. Most likely a bribed vro official involved here.

/\ /\ This.... The trooper is not legal. Be prepared for the questions at registration time. You might be lucky and the person behind the desk is your aunty Mary, but i doubt it. Always thought the 100 series Landcruiser crewcab was a ridiculous tax dodging invention as 99% of people never used the 3rd row of seats anyway. (but if could get away with it.. ha ha!! )

It is still possibly to do this as there is still a loophole that from talk in the trade will close after the new budget. it seems limited to the discovery utility model as a neighbour of mine purchased one recently. Its taxed and classed as a commercial vehicle. The link has an identical one for sale. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Land-Rover/Discovery/3.0-Util/113208536329230/advert?channel=CARS

    its registered already and taxed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,953 ✭✭✭aujopimur

Unless you have a business/trade and at least 3 employees you won't be able to tax it. You will have to make a declaration including PPS nos.when you tax it for the first time.

Yes any guard with half a brain would know straight away that a trooper isn't a crewcab. This stuff is very common.

You could very easily say ' I don't know about the different engine, it was the guy who sold it to me that must have done it'. They won't care who did it.

when you go tax it you give in doe cert and buy another one for i think 3 euro  if you tax it for 3 months when you get a reminder your pin is on it because your cert is in date ,but if you tax for year when you get reminder your cert is out of date ive been asked by guards for nct on my van

Serious question, has anyone ever met a guard who is actually interested in the classification under which a vehicle is taxed? Any I have encountered just look at validity or otherwise and that alone.

On those new Discovery 5-seat comercials, the benefits of those are limited. Road tax is on the old cc system (yes, mad I know) and therefore the only benefit is whan you buy one first day. I assume VAT is reclaimable on them.

I was once asked by a Garda why I was using my commercial landcruiser on a Sunday, he obviously didn't see the 14ft trailer attached to it with 2 tractor wheels/tyres on it. I asked him when farming became a Monday to Friday job.... He was less than impressed but clearly being an ass. Fair enough if I was heading to the beach...

I've an out of date disc on my bike, I keep the proper one in my jacket, I've never once been asked why it's out of date, or asked for the proper one. There's a tax disc on it, it must be fine. I've been asked for proof of insurance when riding my motorbike plenty of times though even though I'm not actually required to carry it (this being why I do anyway). It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if a Garda asked my for an NCT for it.

Relevance? Most Gardai barely know the law at all, let alone bother to enforce it. As a law abiding citizen I do endeavour to make sure all my paperwork is correct but it's no wonder some people are happy to take chances on it when the odds of being caught are so long.

Yes, it very well could be legal. ;)

New EU-wide regulations came into effect on January 1st 2012 relating to commercial vehicles. The new regulations in one section, stipulate that a vehicle can be considered commercial or crewcab once the load area is 33% of the wheelbase when there isn't a bulkhead fitted. I think the percentage rises to 40% where there's a fixed bulkhead but I can't say for sure as I've only investigated what would apply to our motor.

So the likes of the LWB Pajero is large enough (just - has about 3cm to spare) to be converted to crew-cabs, as are possibly LandCruisers and Troopers.

The only real hassle arises when you have to change the classification of the vehicle. And as per existing crew-cab rules, you'll need the PPS numbers of 3 employees to retain your commercial tax rates.

@ doctorchopper - have you ever filled in the commercial goods declaration form for either vehicle? The last 4 times that our tax renewal has come through the door its had the pin number and I've been able to tax it no problem once the DOE is valid on the motor.

no I haven't, but my doe is due the same time the tax is so that might be the problem. I think i'm going to stagger them this time as nutgrove tax office is shut now.

Could be it alright, though I'm still a little surprised. Maybe tax it for 3 months next time it passes its DOE and then see what comes in the renewal. Saves a heap of time and effort being able to do it online.

Dont know if its still the case, but certin professions could tax an estate car as a commercial. Photographers were one such profession.

I wish that you could retain the windows, at least on the left hand side, even if the seats are gone. They create such a dangerous blind spot at junctions, and when reversing a trailer to the left, once the tail goes out of view of the mirror its guesswork. Iver in cavan.
