My jaw is stuck on one side.

I've always had a clicky jaw but it always popped back into place straight away.

I got up Thursday morning and went for a run (jaw was clicking but nothing unusual for me). I went back to bed for half an hour and when I got up, my jaw was stuck on the left hand side. I could open it to a certain point but I was having trouble with even sticking a spoon in my mouth (I could chew ok but having trouble getting the food in).

I have to keep stifling yawns cause it hurts if I try to open my mouth wide.
I started taking over the counter anti-inflammatory tabs but no use.

While it has opened a tiny bit further since Thursday, my whole jaw feels tired and the right side won't stop clicking now.

Is there anything I can do myself to make this go away or do I need to go see a dentist (or a doctor)?

Any improvement since? You probably do need to be checked by your dentist/doctor and possibly referred on to a specialist. Support your chin when you yawn. And you could try applying heat to the area.

    Hi Susie,

I went down to my doctor yesterday morning and he give me a letter and told me to go straight down to the hospital.

I had an x-ray done there and the Dr. wiggled my jaw about. He said it seems to be loosening up by itself and he gave me a prescription for Difene (75mg) for inflammation and told me to take two a day. If it's not better by Friday morning, I am to go back down to the hospital.

It was starting to feel better last night but it varies throughout the day now. I had a hot water bottle up against it last night and it did help.

I'm just hoping it's better by Friday because he mentioned about manoeuvring it back into place

Long term I thing I will have to go see someone about this because I'm afraid that if it happens again, it will be a whole lot worse.

Don't worry - I'm sure they know what they're doing. When I went back in after my op I knew the consultant was going to force my jaw open to 30mm and I was bricking it, but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. They have ways and means for these things! Hopefully with the difene and some rest it'll go back itself but it will bring down the inflammation too so it should help anyway.

I always found the heat helped but it's only temporary as you can't exactly go around with a hot water bottle strapped on to your face :D

Also, think this is a good idea btw.

    Thanks Susie,

Any chance you could pm me a good dentist/place to go to regarding this for a long term solution if you know of one?

My regular dentist is quite new and wasn't really able to help me out with this.

Hi there, sorry to drag up an old thread but am experiencing similar issues with one side of my jaw, just wondering what the permanent fix was?

My jaw seems locked on one side and only opens to a certain width,

    Appreciate any info,

    Thanks

Hey. For me the fix was surgery - permanent? well we'll see. So far, so good. I can only recommend that you get yourself to a specialist to be assessed as everyone's case can be very different.

thanks a mil for the reply, if you could suggest / reccommend a specialist that would be great.
