Do "Ticket Inspectors" Actually Exist i frequently get the DART and Dublin Bus and occasionaly the luas and have never seen one. Not that i need to worry about bumping into one.
Have people ever seen them or been fined

Yes they certainly do. I have seen them on bus as early as 6:30 a.m. or so.

    Yep, very rarely I think.
A few weeks ago, three of them hopped onto my bus at the same time. :)

I get both the DART and LUAS on my daily commute, I would have my LUAS ticket checked on average once a week (I travel the length of the green line) and I would occasionally see them checking tockets of people getting off e.g. at Central Park.

In 15+ years of using the DART during rush hour I had my ticket checked on average once a year at most.

For 18 months up to last year I travelled 75% of the length of the Howth to Greystones line and never had my ticket checked on board a train.

The gates on the station I get on and off generally had the ticket machine barriers open so it's no wonder they are losing money.

Before they had the new ticket machines and barriers there was a seperate gate at my local station that was unlocked most of the time. Occasionally this would be locked. The only day there was a queue to get tickets was the day the gate was locked. Purely coincidental I'm sure...

I have been using Dublin Bus for almost two years now – availing of my Travel Pass – and have never seen an Inspector.

However I have seen plenty of cheats paying the minimum fare, lying to the driver when questioned and going past the number of stages for which they have paid.

The revenue lost must be significant.

I had quite an oddity last Tuesday - a ticket inspector was waiting in Dunboyne station for at least 10 minutes before the train, got on midway through the train, and pretty much directly up to the first carriage where I went in to ask for my ticket - even though he clearly saw me getting a ticket from the station master in the station earlier...

Wonder why he was just sitting there and felt it necessary to check me - if he was that concerned why didn't he do it on the platform. Also, why any checkers on the M3 Parkway - Clonsilla section of the line, it's so barren even if somebody did skip paying, it's hardly much of a loss, barely even worth paying anyone to check.

Otherwise they would have to do some work....ie Broomsbridge. :)

Had three Dublin Bus inspectors get on and check tickets on a 46A in Donnybrook one afternoon a few months ago.

Funny that they never get on a 27 when there's a few lads upstairs smoking away.

Had ticket checked for maybe the second time ever on the DART on Friday evening.

Also saw three inspectors waiting at the gates in either Lansdowne or Sydney Parade this morning, though stupidly all on the same side, if you spotted them in advance you could have easily gone back across the bridge to the other side.

if one did they wouldnt ask them but if you where 50c out of your fare they would fine you and think they had authority cowards

dont really see the point on them as u buy tickets off the driver and he would't let u on if u didn't have a ticket

Theyre to catch the people who pay minimum fare but stay on beyond that. Also to check Student Cards etc.

also there to check up on the drivers I imagine

I was told by an ex driver that the ticket checks on buses have a few roles; to spot check passengers for possible evasion and overtraveling, to spot check on drivers and to help ascertain and verify passenger loadings and alighting on buses.

why would 3 hop on could they not use one

1 tends to stay by the door, the other 2 work from front to back of each deck and meet in the middle. It's to make sure no one tries to get around 1 inspector to avoid them when a back is turned.

Don't know where you've that idea from. Buses do get stopped and Gards called onto them when there's problems on them. I've seen it myself many times.
