The major German daily Bild said 43-year-old Schumacher's negotiations about 2013 and beyond are now "in full swing."

The report claims Mercedes is offering the seven-time World Champion a new contract for 2013, while Schumacher is apparently pushing for a unilateral option that would allow him to decide to keep racing in 2014, as well.

I hope he stays. How does the man motivate himself. He has 600 million quid in the bank. Almost all the records that exist in F1. A 21 year career in F1, racing guys that were babies or not even born when he was a grand prix winner.

Look at Damon and Johnny H, and Martin. These guys were teammates or enemies on track. They are retired 10 years or more and MS is still at it. You can tell that they admire him.

The flashes of brilliance he has shown on his comeback have been worth it, I really hope he stays, one win would truly amazing.

I hope he stays. I wonder if part of his motivation is to hang on another season or two in the hopes of getting a competetive car & be able to show he's still capable of mixing it up with the best of them...rather than disappearing into the sunset with a failed comeback due to the complete inadequacy of Mercs car for the last three seasons

You don't turn up at test sessions to see how the test drivers are getting on with the new bits on the car if you don't intend racing on for another season....

I think this year he is on it fully. He can clearly still mix it, and is beating his team mate. A LEGEND

I agree, but the car doesn't live up to either driver & it would be a crying shame if we didn't get to see Schumacher shine again before retiring

I have to agree with all the comments but surely a company like Mercedes cant keep producing mediocre F1 cars. Or are they the new Toyota?

But isn't Rosberg signed up for 2013? If this story is true then Hamiltons move to Merc isn't likely.

Yup, Rosberg is signed up at Mercedes until the end of 2013. He signed a contract extension at the end of last year.

Would 2014 bring him into the turbo engine regs? He might be hoping for a competitive car for that season.

Will those Turbos have flames flying out the back and be really noisy (fingers crossed) or have things changed:confused:

i would imagine they will be much quieter than current engines, not sure about flames but not much id say

its a pity the oul cnut wouldnt give it up and give some young talanted driver with nothing a chance at it

I have no doubt in my mind that had he been given the chance to race a more competitive car, he would have had far more success and a good few wins under his belt.

    He should have replaced Massa.
And I know it's impossible but I would have loved to have seen him race in Indy or the WEC R18 Audi.

In fact, I'd hate to see him stop without another race win at the least.

we can hope, but that was the early days of turbo technology i have a bad feeling they will have a much more muted sound. I hope i'm wrong though

I really hope he stays on for at least another 2 years. He's doing well in quali for the most part and with a bit of luck he could have scored a lot more points in the dog of a car he has.

It makes me ill to listen to speculation about someone like Paul Di Resta replacing him. A miserable Scot who's finding it hard enough to beat Hulkenberg.

The sport will always be more interesting with Schumi around.

UIrrrggg totally agree. Another overrated driver from the Franchitti clan.

Would be nice to see what one of the other top drivers might do in the Merc, but there's something nice about having Schumacher in F1, would be a bit disappointed see him leave without getting some better results

glad that schumi is looking to 2013 and 2014, hopefully a more competitive far that will give him a chance for a couple of wins :)

    Some new rumours...
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Singapore:

"Lewis Hamilton's future continues to be the subject of speculation within Formula 1, following Eddie Jordan's report on this website two weeks ago that the McLaren driver was on the verge of moving to Mercedes. There has been an interesting development on that story on Friday, with the German tabloid Bild - which has close links with Mercedes - reporting that Michael Schumacher's chances of staying on had 'dropped suddenly'. Bild says Schumacher's future 'depends on' Hamilton's decision. Meanwhile, Peter Sauber has told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport he would take Schumacher 'immediately' if he became available."

A move to Sauber would be a step forward for Schumacher. That car seems to be up for it if the driver is, unlike the Merc

I don't know about that. Sauber are the team I support, but they're pretty similar. I'd say he'd be better off sticking with Merc for two years.

Well lately Sauber have shown to be mixing it up, two solid drivers already although Kobayashi has been a bit dare I say it, mundane over the last season & a half?

I actually don't think Schumacher will bother staying in F1 if he doesn't get a seat in a championship competitive car

Really? I have to say he seems to be one of, if not the most, committed driver in the sport. The dog of a car he has had to deal with, and the ill luck he has suffered, and yet he soldiers on and has pulled his season together.

Look at other drivers p1ssing and moaning because they had a bad pitstop or couldn't get a clean quali lap in.

I think that he is a man totally at peace with what he does and is in it for the love of the sport. I would think he will be there for as long as his body allows him to compete!

    (And no, we aren't related!)

    +1

Returning to F1 with Merc made sense. Aside from the fact that they had a lot of potential at the time, they're a German institution and Ross Brawn was at the helm.

Would Schumacher drive for a different team at this stage of his career? I doubt it.

Sauber have been impressive this season but they're still a relatively unproven quantity. They could very easily struggle next season.

Oh I grant that, but I think what I meant to say was, unless he's in a shout with a title, I don't really think he's interested. He's stuck with Merc because I think he expected substantial improvements over the three seasons.

To knowingly jump into a car that's 100% not in with a chance of a title, I just don't think will appeal to him
