Offical Taxi Receipt

Got a fare from Ballyfermot to Vue Cinema, Liffey Valley, flagged a driver down

Fare was 10.70, that's grand, about average.
He hit a button and it went to 11.70

Now this was one of those large vans and I was at the back, I'm certain I saw the fare jump but to avoid an unneccesary argument I asked for a receipt so I could check

Sorry, no scanner but it's a small square of paper named "Offical Taxi Receipt"

He wrote To and From in an unreadable scrawl and put €12 on it. Stupidly I didn't question that.

It also gives landline numbers to ranks around Dublin, Raheny for example, College Green and Finglas rank were others
Do taxi ranks realy have dedicated landlines
    Sounds strange to me.
Unoffical arrangement that one driver takes care of the phone? Sounds bizarre, sounds very old school.

I wanted a receipt like every other driver have, the ones they print off.

All I have is a piece of paper.
But I went into Easons and used a pencil to jot down his plate number. And I wrote his licence plate number and verified to www.cartell.ie

Look, I'm not pushed over a euro, I think he did me by charging for a second passenger, I was on my own.

My question is what receipts are acceptable?
Does it have to be the print off with all the info or can drivers use a shoddy scrap of paper?

    Should I complain? :o
Not over the euro but over the fact this lad gives dodgy receipts?

    States at the bottom
"Only Licenced taxis have roof signs"

Reminds me of hackney days, I think I've met one of the real old-timers and he was using these receipts long before printers ever came around

    complain over both.

    overcharging is a serious offense.

Under Section 39 of the Taxi Regulation Act 2003, you are entitled to receive a printed receipt at the end of a taxi journey upon payment. The receipt should detail the date, duration of the journey, distance, amount paid and vehicle licence number.

Under Section 39 of the Taxi Regulation Act 2003, it is an offence for a taxi or hackney driver to charge you more than the maximum fee shown on the meter or the fee agreed at the start of the journey. If you feel you have been overcharged, you are entitled to make a complaint about the taxi driver.

Can I make a complaint about a taxi fare?

Yes. If you have a dispute about a fare you should should pay the fare displayed on the meter including extras. You should make sure you get a printed receipt and proceed to make a formal complaint to the National Transport Authority. See our document on making a complaint about a taxi, hackney or limousine driver.

Thanks a mill for the answer :)

I've seen many threads here about taxi complaints and then the poster says they never got the plate number so they couldn't follow up.

I have the plate number and the licence plate number and this "Offical Taxi Receipt" which belongs in 1992 and not 2012 but the above link wants a printed receipt

    I don't have one :(

I hope what I have is enough

Was the taxi you got an actual taxi with roof sign or was it a hackney cab? If a hackney cab they are not required to have a printer for receipts but must still provide a written receipt with certain details like date time booked and start and finish points etc.

If it is a taxi then there is no excuse for being on the road for hire with no working printer.

Unfortunately Foggy, there is an excuse....it's called the Taxi Directorate of the National Transport Authority.

Mikemac a taxi must provide a receipt if requested to do so. All taxis are fitted with meters and printers. Now unless something had gone wrong with the printer fair enough it can easily happen and if so the driver should have explained that.
As pointed out hackneys are not required to have a meter or printer and the fare is pre-agreed. However if it was a hackney, the driver was breaking the law as hackneys are not meant to pick up on the street they must be prebooked by phone. I note that you said in your post that you flagged him down so I am assuming it was a taxi as you would have seen the roof sign. Ya cant miss them they are big enough lol lol.

just curious if you make a complaint about being over charged by a taxi do you get a refund, or anything back for that matter?

There is a phone box at the rank across from the Windsor Garage in Raheny village.

It's hard to see in this but it's the grey box beside the street light

It's a great system, my grandparents used to live around that area and would use the service a lot.
