Would like suggestions for a family car that's easy on the road tax. Budget less than 5k. Really can't think for meself on this one. OH hates the idea of an estate, I hate the idea of driving a skoda octavia. Still, need to replace '02 TDDI mondeo with something similar.

Smaller than that 2.0l diesel, family car(2 kids and their baggage), more poke than that 115ps engine preferably and something that handles? Any ideas?

Doubt you'll save any money by blowing 5k on another car.

You wont get smaller AND more poke for €5k. If you want smaller get a Focus 1.6 TDCi, the estate looks smart or if you want more poke get a Passat TDI 130. Plenty of both to choose from in the 2004-2006 range.

PS, for the same poke as you have as well as practical and a bit different, how about a SEAT Altea?

Thanks folks. More or less looking for one of these yokes for 5 or 6k. Less than 2.0l or 1.9l.

Really don't want to get rid of the old car at all. Head is wrecked.

    I don't get it..

You don't want to get rid of the Mondeo but you do want to spend 5k to save money

You wouldn't drive an octavia but you would drive a Zafira :pac:

    Stick with your own one.

OH will beat me to death if I don't find something. I'd happily drive a Focus estate. The missus won't.

Is her motivation to "save" a couple of hundred per annum in motor tax?

No no, God no. We both hate revenue getting 600 quid in tax. Missus wants something newer while spending less on the old road tax.

I hardly see that car anymore. It's gone on it's daily 70 mile commute while I'm on nights. This will be her ''new'' car like.

    How about a C-Max?

A bit expensive for the year but it looks clean, has a full service history and appears to have been maintained properly which is important with the 1.6 Tdci engine.

Not much poke -about 105bhp but 1.5dci, 384 tax 2 yrs nct low miles, plenty car for €5k imo, not quite worth the asking though.

Wouldn't touch that model 1.5 dci. We've had a fair few and the 1.5dci 2004 had a Delphi fuel system absolute disaster really let them down. Ultimately they would need new injectors and pump when they start running rough cost 2k. Pity but the newer model megane 1.5dci 2006 onwards had a Bosch fuel system which made the engine great. And the that 2006 Megane are great cars. But unless your going to buy 2006 2007 model you will highly likely have trouble. The vast majority had injector trouble.

If you do nothing else with your life, stay away from Pugs. The wife might look sweet in her Ferrari 456 lookylikey but she'll not be impressed with sitting on the hard shoulder, if she does 70 miles a day get something else
