I'm going to be travelling to D'olier Street from Leixlip for college and I was wondering which mode of transport would be best, bus or train? I know the 66 stops right on D'olier street so I was leaning towards that but I'm not sure about the train?

Also I was wondering what sort of travel card would be the cheapest eg leap card, student rambler ect?

    Thanks!

The student 30day rambler gives good value with 6 x 5day weeks(30 non-consecutive days) bus use for €86. the 5 day rambler is €17.20. You will need the Student travelcard(which is also a leap card) to get these tickets.

    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Fares--Tickets/Tickets/Student-Tickets/

Irish Rail do not give information on pricing for their weekly/monthly rail tickets in tha way that Dublin bus are able to, so best thing is to contact them for details of student tickets. the individual leapcard single fare Leixlip to Tara St is €2.10, there is no other reductions available using the leap card.

According to the Rail Users Ireland website there is a 7day rolling rail ticket costing €21.10 for unlimited travel for one week between the two stops Confey/Louisa Bridge and Tara st. there is also a student ticket available for the inner short hop zone(Rush & Lusk, Maynooth, Hazelhatch & Celbridge, Bray) for €20.10 ?? which gives 7 days unlimited rail travel within the zone.

The following are the options available between bus and rail between Leixlip and the city centre:

    Cash fares:
    Bus: €2.65
    Train: Single - €2.50; Return - €4.70

    Leap Card fares:
    Bus: €2.40
    Train: €2.10

Dublin Bus Travel 90 10 Journey ticket (Allows 90 minutes unlimited travel): €21.50
    (effectively €2.15 per trip)

Irish Rail Student Weekly Unlimited Rail Only Ticket - €21.50
Irish Rail Student Monthly Unlimited Rail Only Ticket - €80.00

Dublin Bus Student Bus Only Unlimited 5 Day Rambler (Any 5 non-consecutive days) - €17.20
Dublin Bus Student Bus Only Unlimited 30 Day Rambler (Any 30 non-consecutive days) - €86.00

Student Short Hop (Dublin Bus and Irish Rail) Unlimited Monthly Ticket - €102.00

The weekly and monthly tickets all require you to purchase a Student Travelcard - see www.studenttravelcard.ie - Note that this card will also double up as a LEAP card so that you can use the epurse facility on it. So say you get a Dublin Bus student rambler ticket, you can load some cash onto the Student travelcard so to avail of the LEAP fares on Irish Rail.

Most trains from Leixlip operate to Pearse, so you have the choice of getting off at Tara Street or Pearse. Some terminate at Connolly.

Prices and times aside, if the bus stop is closer to you than the train station then i would take the bus seeing that it stops at the place that you are going to. If the station is closer then you have a walk from connolly or Tara to where you are going with Tara being the closest about 5 mins.

The choice between Bus and Train from Leixlip to town, with D'Olier Street and Tara Street Station being so close to each other, would be a no-brainer in my view.

Forget the bus unless you use an X.

Messing with traffic in Lucan and Chapelizod both ways will break your heart.
