I went to look at a few Bimmers this morning, and after 3 test drives, plumbed for one (in that I put down a deposit to take it off the list, but I'm taking a 24 hour test drive next week). When it came to money, we were about 900 quid apart on first blush, and while we didn't meet, he did give me another 300 off, and then told me that instead of coming all the way down, they would paint some sort of gloop on it to keep it sparkly and stop raining and leaves from dirtying it up.

He showed me a website (http://www.jewelultra.co.uk/, I think) and explained it all, but tbh it sounded like something you'd see advertised on late night tv. I also can't see how they could spend 400 quid on it, which it was he said it was worth, but I can't shake the feeling that perhaps I should have told him to stick the stuff and I'll take another couple hundred off the price? It is 'endorsed' by BMW, whatever that means.

So a. did I get slightly fobbed off with this 'offer' and b. is this stuff worth it?

You might have been bitten by a shark. The young lad in their valeting shop will probably be told throw a coat of Halford's polish on it for you. :)

Seriously though, who knows? Maybe some of the lads here like R.O.R abd Drummerboy08 that deal in leasing and main dealers all the time could tell you if something like that is genuine or not. My rule of thumb is though that if you are not 100% sure of the deal then sleep on it before committing, irrespective of what pressure the salesperson tries to put you under.

Thanks bazz, yeah nothing signed in stone yet, will take it for the 24 hour test drive on thursday and use that as an excuse if something doesn't sit right. Plenty of excuses I can use to walk away.

Do you have a written agreement that this deposit you paid is refundable?

You might be walking away without some or all of your deposit though.

True, I did mention it that if I wasn't happy, I could walk away with my e500 deposit, he didn't argue but come to think of it he didn't say 'of course' either. Oh well, I'm 99% sure it's the car for me, I just need to spend 4 days waiting for the buyer's remorse to kick in, and then a day belting it around the country roads to see how it holds up. Maybe I'll take the day off and drive up to Dublin.

I'd quite like to rain on Friday, too, if someone can have a word. :D
