How did you narrow it down to those 2?

You'll get people saying they like 1 over the other, good tunes both, so how do you pick one for the first dance?

Feels like home has been quite popular as a first dance since the dawson creek days, its really REALLY slow and really long, IIRC its near 5 minutes. long time on the floor on its own. better known than the perri song.

1000 years is similar vein from where its popularity came from, american screens, about as long and even slower than the first one.

Toss of a coin. Its a long time on the floor for 2 of you on your own no matter which one you pick.

We are in a similar position in that we had 2 songs we wanted. We decided to have one as first dance for bride and groom and the other for second dance with bridal party. Would that be an option?

we both had several songs that we liked but out of all them those are our to fav's. yea i prefer the first dance to be slow and romantic, i feel this is the one and only time that we will have a romantic dance together as neither of us are dancers. i am also hoping that our bridal party join in the dance after a few minutes and maybe a few guests.

christina perri had just come out when we got engaged and that song was played on the radio a lot and kinda became our song if you like but "feels like home"
i think lyrically fits the occasion.

Yes. This is the norm if you have 2 songs. I would always try and recommend the second song be more up tempo if possible for joining in with bridal party.
People just want the party to get started at that stage, but having said that it doesn't really matter. there's no rules about this. If you want 2 slow songs played as theyre meaningful to you, go for it.

Whatever is special for you really. We do things from Let's Stay Together by Al Green to Harvest Moon by Neil Young.

Imagine your perfect first dance and whatever is playing in your head is what you should go with. :)

If I had to pick however, I would go with A Thousand Years. An instrumental/shortened version maybe. There's no law saying you have to do the exact studio recording! :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph3WAu9m1pQ

We had 2 songs to choose from as well (one very slow and one a bit more up tempo).

We would play them and have mock first dances around our living room to help us choose and one just felt more 'us' if that makes sense.

I would be a bit mindful of the length of the song though. At my sisters wedding she had Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls for her second dance with the bridal party. great song but way too slow and way too long. We had Nothings Gonna Stop us Now by Starship for our second song, got the floor full!

We had a few songs narrowed down and then asked the band who would be playing it which would suit them best and which might be tough to dance to. Went with shane mcgowan / sineid o'conors duet Haunted.

Starship always works. Iris drags. Point I was trying to make earlier, too slow, too long. try and keep it under the 4 minute mark if possible.

I picked my brother and his wife's first dance song. Well, I told them about it and they loved it and went with it. Great lyrics:

Of the two you mentioned above, I'd prefer Christina Perri.

We have a few in mind but we keep going back to the same one Light My Fire by The Doors. We'd have to go with the 'radio edit' though as the original is like 6 minutes long!

I like the idea of doing mock dances and seeing which feels best.

My sister chose Al Green's "Let's Stay together" at her wedding last month. She told me beforehand she was going with that and I thought it an odd choice. But when I heard it on the night during the first dance, it was just perfect and the best first dance song I ever heard.

Sorry, not a fan of either of the two choices you proposed OP but if they have special meaning to you, go ahead with whichever you prefer.

Big at American weddings not so big over here.
Try "you are the sunshine of my life" by Lionel Richie.

Ive seen brides pick this, again, its more of an american tune as it doesnt get much airplay over here. which isnt too much of a problem but just be aware very few people in the room will know it, but the bigger problem is its very very long, like 5 and half minutes IIRC.

Had "daddy cool" by boney M requested last weekend, bride said play 2-3 minutes of that, which even at that is a long time on the floor alone, that worked quite well as it was upbeat and crowd were getting into it which went very nicely with the band starting as soon as it ended.
