The 42 & 43 series MF's are basically the same tractor under the skin. The 43 series was a remodel of the 42 series. The 42 series replaced the popular 300 series with the 4245 replacing the 390 and the 4255 replacing the 390T. The 42 series was made from 97-02 with the 43 series available from 02-04. The 54 series replaced these tractors in 04 with a completly new model.

The main changes from the 42 to the 43 series were slight change in external panels and an interior remodel the main part being the removal of the long floor mounted gear level on the 42 series to a right hand console mounted short gear stick on the 43 series. The gear stick on the 43 series is definetly an improvement on the floor mounted one on the 42 series which because of its length could be a bit awkard to use. The lever on the 42 series could give problems with linkages however I believe it was a relatively inexpensive fix. The rest of the interior cab on the 43 series got a bit of an upgrade.

Not 100% sure but most of the 43 series have side pillar mounted exhausts stacks definetely the high vis models with the snoopy nose. The 42 series had a centre bonnet mounted stacks which do hinder forward vision a bit especially if you have a loader mounted as well.

The 43 series had a twin hydraulic pump which could be combined to speed up hydraulics which is very handy on a loader. I'm not sure if this option was availabe on the 42 series.

The 4245 & 4345 as stated above replaced the 390 and are both around the 90 hp mark. The 4255 replaced the 390T which is around the 100 hp. The 4245 & 4255 were pretty much the same tractor with a larger turbo & wastegate on the 55 model to give the extra power.

PN12 is spot on in his info above. We have a 02 4255 purchased last may and are happy with it so far. They have a different engine from the 3 series engine though, upgraded for emissions and it appears to be a little heavier on diesel. Overall nice comfortable capable tractor.

Our 4245 has that option, very handy for stacking hay/straw. It diverts the oil from the linkage to the loader, so you cant use the linkage (or have anything attached to it) when you are using it
