You can get a refund on tax in the UK. What he means is that if you dont want the tax he'll claim it back.

Tax is "transferrable" here too in that it's the car thats taxed, not the owner. The tax stays with it.

It is quite common in the UK for the car tax to be removed on the sale of a vehicle.

In some cases even the number plates are removed by the owner and a new number assigned.

    Yes.

    Car must be scrapped.

    That's not full truth.
You are due motortax refund if:
    • The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,
    • The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
    • The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

Definitely not ordinary course of business to take tax disc from a sold car and refund it. Dealers used to refund tax on every car they took into stock but this was stopped a couple of years ago. Would suit me if it was still possible as on Tuesday I'll trade in a car with insurance to 6/13 for one with insurance to 10/12. Not a lot of money but annoying.

your insurance transfers over. Just ring them and tell them the new reg and your new insurance disc will have 06/13 too.

Not in the part of the UK where I've lived for the past 16 years (London) that being the part where no one has an "insurance disc"; we're talking about road fund licence/vehicle excise duty/motor tax (delete as desired)!
