    That last years news.

This year he has bred twins worth £18,000gns @ Stirling and £8,000gns at the Kelso sale yesterday. Also another son made £4000gns at Kelso yesterday and at Shrewsbury in July his first son for sale made £3,800gns.

All sons were February born and all from the same breeder.

Pardon the ignorance here but is it commercial value thats driving the value of these rams or is it wealthy individuals with passion for the individual breeds

The prices are high but if a Pedigree Sheep Farmer spends €10,000 on a ram. Ram is used on 80 ewes. That is €125 per ewe in his first season. If he breeds well you can sell AI straws at €20 each ''which isn't that high as I have seen AI straws sell for £75 each'' for Pedigree rams. Ram would be used for a good few seasons and Semen collected for the future.

Also the lads buying these tups have massive acerage that I could only dream about. Collect sizeable SFP every year. Have large flocks and some sceptics might say they are in a 'Magic Circle'.

plus the fact that many breeders have business interests , it's a widely known fact that when the squeeze came on certain off shore accounts, the cash was put towards pedigree stock in cattle and sheep
