i'm looking for a pair of entry level wheels. basically the cheaper the better. performance isn't a priority (obviously) but durability is. i was looking at these three sets on roseversand.

    shimano-racing-wheel-set-28700-c-wh-r501 €79

    shimano-racing-wheel-set-28700-c-wh-r501-30 €99

    shimano-racing-wheel-set-28700-c-wh-rs20-a €129

first up, can anyone tell me what, if anything, is the difference between the first two? Secondly, would the third pair be more hard-wearing and therefore worth the extra few quid?

Needless to say i'm open to suggestions if anyone has seen anything better out there, but i can't go very far over the €100 mark. (I have a €10 voucher for rose)

For price Mavic Aksium seems to be your best bet, or maybe fulcrum 7. Guy sold a new pair with tubes and tyres for about 170 on adverts this week.

My bike came with R501's, they were awful, got them replaced under warranty this week.

Read through the thread above for further details

The first two are basically the same except the 1st has a 24mm deep rim and the 2nd has a 30mm rim. 24mm will be lighter but the 30mm will have a slight aero advantage which is of no real benefit if you are using for recreational use.

I've used both the Fulcrum 7's and Aksiums the past year and think the Aksiums are a better* wheel.

    *Probably coz they sound nicer

    thanks for the replies lads.

I have a pair of fulcrum 7's on my current bike. i find them good but as it's my first road bike i can't compare them with anything else. i have a new carbon frame and want to get some nice wheels for it (not to mention saddle bars etc etc). i was going to transfer the fulcrums on to it , get a pair of cheap wheels for the old bike and then get some decent wheels next year when hopefully the finances are better. might just hold off purchasing til i can afford a decent set.
