Ford 5000 pto engaging problems

We have just purchased a Ford 5000. Unfortunately the independent PTO does not operate although the seller said it was working. I have fitted a pressure gauge to pressure point on RH side of rear transmission housing. It reads 40 to 60 psi depending on revs. Book says it should be 130psi or more. Does this mean pump is poor. How much trouble to remove and repair? What would it cost to repair? Thanks.

Sounds like it could be something small like a PTO band, they are pretty cheap to buy but you will have to split the rear end to get at it.

It could be the pipe bringing oil up from the hydraulic pump to the pto clutch pack. You will have to take off the lift cover to do this. If it is the pipe then it is only about 20 euro. Hydraulic pump can be got on ebay for around 180 sterling + shipping look here.

Get back to me if you are taking the lift cover yourself, there is a knack to it.

Can you remove the dual hydraulic pump on 1971 Ford 5000 without removing the lift cover? This tractor also has no power steering operational. It appears that the oil reservoir is leaking oil via the pump seal into the engine oil. You can see the level dropping after filling. Would a leaking shaft seal cause complete pressure loss in the steering. I am looking for a good exploded view of the steering pump and PTO and hydraulic pump that suits this model. The repair manual I have is printed in 1968 and some items appear to be different. Thanks.

Ya the hydraulic pump can be taken out under the brake pedals. Sorry can't help you on the power steering. If the tractor has dual power it needs a more expensive hydraulic pump. Will have a look on the diagrams. A good website for help is here

Try get in touch with Brian on there.

I have just spotted this post on another forum. I am wondering if this may explain why the PTO does not work on this tractor. It looks as though this bolt has been removed at some time. The guy who sold the tractor said the PTO was working when he sold it.
    XXXXXXXXXXXX

Topped off the transmission and hydraulic fluids. I was in too much of a hurry so I removed the wrong bolt when I went to remove the fill level plug. I removed a 9/16th bolt that is in the left side of the transmission just above the left floor board. The bolt is several inches ahead of the PTO lever. When I removed the bolt, it had about 1/2 inch of thread near the head of the bolt and then a the rest of the bolt is about an inch long pin that sticks inside of the rear axle/hydraulic system case.

Once I saw that I had removed the wrong bolt, I tried to replace it. It was difficult to replace in that I couldn't insert it all the way in to catch the threads. I finally got it in and tightened down. Now, when I engage the PTO lever, I get nothing. It doesn't make any different sounds, it just doesn't engage the PTO.

    Now what?
