    Hi,
I'm after purchasing a FTA satellite combo box that I was told would also pick up saorview channels. I had to buy an indoor antennae along with it. ( back to the past of rabbit ears apparently!)
I've tried to set up the box and search for channels , I've manage to get some if the English channels like BBC etc however tv3, rte are in the channels list but When I go to view them they are scrambled.

How do I unscramble them? I'm sure I've it all done wrong , I stillndont understand why I need the rabbit ears. I was told to connect them into the satellite box. I wonder should u just stick them into the back of the tv instead??

    Many thanks!
The box is an Ariva Ferguson 250 combo.

The Irish channels picked up from the satellite at 28 degrees east (where the UK channels are) will be scrambled & are only available with a Sky subscription.

You'll have to plug a suitable UHF aerial into the Ariva's terrestrial aerial input & scan for the Saorview terrestrial channels. Your 'rabbit ears' will only do this job in a strong signal area.

There's a thread on the 250 over in the terrestrial forum

It's not a problem specific to the Ariva 250. The only way you'll get Irish channels on satellite without a Sky sub. is Saorsat on Ka-sat @ 9 degrees east, but this doesn't currently include TV3 & 3e.

OP, you might need to experiment with the positioning of the rabbit ears aerial to get a reliable signal, but there's a possibility it won't work at all. If it doesn't work out & you want to get more info. on aerials etc., start a thread in the terrestrial forum, giving your approximate location & whether you live in a house/appartment etc.

When you say 'had to buy', do you mean that you were told this by a shop assistant? Do you already have terrestrial reception at home, maybe via a rooftop aerial?

Thanks for all the replies! I dont think I'll ever get the hang of all this saorview freeview stuff! I dunno why it had to change!

I have terrestrial through the house Aerial but I thought it would stop working at the end of the month. When I said I had to buy I probably should have said It was recommended to me by the guy in the shop that I get this aerial in order to get saorview channels with this combi box. Like I said I haven't a clue and was pretty happy with the old way of things ;(

Oh for the day of turning on your tv and getting all your channels without all this hassle ;(

The analogue signal is being switched off for good on October 24th. Try connecting the Ariva's terrestrial input to your 'house aerial' & scan for terrestrial (DVB-T) channels.

Yes connect to the house aerial and rescan. Please note the scan you need to perform is NOT satellite, but terrestrial. It's a seperate menu option. I think with the Ariva it will put the new channels at the end (in the hundreds).

If you get them in, it's probably best to then delete every channel, and then scan terrestrial first, then satellite. This will put the Irish channels as 1,2,3,4 etc.

Dear Jesus the amount of misinformation that must be flying around the place with half-ignorant gombeens selling things that they haven't a clue about.

You have an aerial on the roof but you still were told to get "rabbits ears"

Do you already get a good quality TV3 and TG4? If you do, throw the bloody rabbits ears in the bin where it belongs. Plug the aerial cable into the aerial in socket on the box.

When you have both the aerial and the satellite cable connected to the box, do a scan for channels and it will have the Irish channels on the first eight channels. Simples.

No, take them back to the shop for a refund. They were miss sold, as they are a VHF aerial, and you didn't even need an indoor aerial either.

Absolutely, get your money back from the scumbags.

There seem to be generations of morons/wideboys in certain shops who will attempt to flog the wrong kit. Back in 1978 an idiot in RTV Rentals tried to tell me that a telescopic VHF indoor aerial was the business for getting RTE2 (only on UHF at that point in Dublin), when RTE was drowning the trade (and the general public) in printed technical bulletins that even a moron in a hurry could understand.

More than likely not morons/wideboys/scumbags. Just someone who works in a shop & has been instructed to try & sell 'X' aerial along with 'Y' receiver.

OK. Then the assistant is stupid and their manager is the moron/wideboy/scumbag. I'd love someone to name the chain concerned but I suspect I know which one.

Happened to be in Currys/PC world yesterday and loads of people were buying and enquiring about saorview boxes and i c that some of these boxes are costing €150 (pure madness IMO)

Ive a funny feeling that lots of people are buying these boxes and they dont even need them because most people living in the Dublin area would be on Sky or UPC

Also perhaps by the way, the OP did not mention to the sales assistant that he had an aerial on the side/on top of his house and thus the sales assistant advised him to get the rabbits ears - Ive no aerial on my house and use the rabbits ears (bought in lidl for 10 or 12 euro) to get the Irish channels on the Ariva 120.

    Regards

OK. These are rabbits ears - a VHF only indoor aerial

    vhf_indoor_antenna_used_on_TV.jpg

These are not for a UHF signal and should not be used for Saorview.
