:mad:It is an overtaking lane, NOT a fast lane. Rules of road say you DRIVE in left lane and only use right hand lane for overtaking.

No, you were in the OVERTAKING lane, he shouldn't have undertook you, but you shouldn't have stayed in that lane. How about you look after your own driving before gesturing at other drivers about theirs.

He had tailgated me for abit and I was peeved off that he had being so close to me so I was even more annoyed that he undertook me........anyway when he done that I pointed my finger in anger at him as he passed and flashed my lights when he went back in on front of me........anyway to my shock blue flashers came on in his tail lights and he put his hand out the window signalling for me to get out of the fast fane despite doing 80mph.......Even though he didn't stop me should I be worried about this, like expect a summons in the post?

I hope you also had your fog lights as you were driving in the fast lane

Put simply, the general consensus is that you should take this opportunity to revisit the rules of the road to brush up not only on appropriate terminology but also on legal driving requirements.

You should count yourself lucky that he didn't pull you over and provide you with a piece of paper known as a penalty charge notice for failing to drive in the left most lane available to you!!

On a matter of language, undertaking is carrying something out. Overtaking is surpassing or exceeding. Undertaking is not the same as overtaking or passing on the left/inside.

    Lane 1

The normal 'keep left' rule applies. Stay in this lane unless you are overtaking.

Just in case you where unclear on that, OP.

You might earn more respect if you acknowledge the hubristic elements of your post rather than getting irritated by the schadenfreude enjoyed by other posters.

the motorways are full of people like yourself blocking up the Fast lane, do you not realize when im tailgating and flashing my lights it means im on a timed lap.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 211 ✭✭Maggie 2

I travel that road regularly and am at a loss to know what the fcuk other drivers are about! Like other posters have said, drive on the left, overtake in the middle or outside lanes and get back into the left again. Morons hogging the middle and outside lanes, like the original poster are driving dangerously and should be out off the road.
By the way, it's NOT motorway after the big ball.

I don't normally jump on the bandwaggon but man you're way wrong here.

You were in the fast passing lane when there was obviously enough room for you to pull back in if the unmarked car could undertake you. His whole point was that you shouldn't be sitting in that lane unless you are overtaking other cars, i.e. he was telling you to move back in to the driving lane.

He was dead right IMO whilst also decent enough to ignore the fact that you were doing 80mph in what is (AFAIK) a 100kmph stretch.

The speed limit changes near enough the big ball at Naas - it is 100kph on N7 and then changes to 120 just after the big ball past Naas on way to Newbridge, so if someone was in the overtaking lane sitting at 80 it would be very slow and would probably build up a trail behind them.

I passed an unmarked GS car today at aproaching 160km/h. Their was a car ahead of me and behind me, I suspected the avensis might be a Garda car so tapped the brakes as i noticed the rear light aerials etc and the poor fecker behind me nearly tail ended me. The car ahead motored on. Passed him at about 140 and pulled in a bit. The garda was obviously on other business as it did not stop any of the 3 cars.

Everyone knows that on a 3 lane motorway, the left lane is the Slow lane, the middle lane is the Fast lane and the right lane is the Really, Really Fast lane..... If you don't believe me just read 'The Rules of the Road Irish Style' in a Blog by CynicalDub...... These are the real Rules of the Road.

100kph on N7, 120kph on M7, OP said he was doing 80mph which is not slow (but could still build up a trail).

There's definitely a disgruntled boards member out there creating these accounts in the last fortnight, asking questions they know winds up Motors members. Don't even answer them.

Giving the cop in the unmarked car the 1 fingured salute didnt really help you.

So he decided to flash the blue lights on his unmarked car to show you that he was a cop.

Consider yourself lucky he didnt pull you over.

And that, in one swell foop, is Irish driving and Irish law enforcement neatly complementing each other.

Ignoring the fact that speed limits have been in km/h since 2005 or thereabouts, it does seem as if that stretch of the Naas Bypass has a 100 km/h speed limit.

So, it seems as if the OP was doing ~130 km/h and holding up an unmarked Garda car in the "fast lane", which clearly was not en route to an emergency, yet is uncertain whether he was nicked.

Apropos of not much, the big ball is a sculpture called Perpetual Motion (or should that be Petulant Motion?):
As an element symbol of motion, a sphere of this size with roadmarkings, would act as an impressive yet integrated celebration of travel and motorway design. It would appeal to a broad cross-section of roadusers and be a lighthearted and distinctive landmark.
Symbolic and lighthearted, like the Irish Rules of the Road perhaps...

    160km/h? It's a real pity you weren't pulled in.

A chap was let off by a judge a few years ago for doing 200kph on the motorway.

His solicitor proved that even though he was traveling in a staright line with no other cars aroud him,and doing 200kph,he was not actualy dangerously/wrecklessly driving.

The judge let the chap away with it.

    It made all the newspapers.;)

That chap was clearly a moron. The judge an even bigger one by the sounds of it.

Well his solicitor made a very good case and he managed to show the judge that his client was not actually doing anything dangerous to other road users,as there were no other road users around him.

The judge accpeted that doing that speed on a clear straight stretch of motorway was not actually wreckless or dangerous driving.
