Anyone now when it's back this year

My grandmother got a letter stating 12 October.

When do you hear back if you have been approved for fuel allowance? I sent in my application before the start of the summer

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 581 ✭✭✭phoenix999

My Gran got approved 4 weeks after sending in her form. But she's on state pension and over 70. It depends on the individual's circumstances I guess.

The fuel season for 2012/2013 will start on Monday, 8 October 2012 and finishes on Friday, 5 April 2013 (26 weeks). info from http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/extra_social_welfare_benefits/fuel_allowance.html

I got a letter stating that I got paid an extra 20eur last April in error and that they will take this amount back in Oct. No dates were given. When I asked in my local Welfare they said it was a nationwide error of an overpayment and that everyone should have got letters and that the payment will now be a week later in October. No-one else I know got this letter. Has anyone here received this letter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭danjo-xx

    No letter here.

With it starting on the 8th October rather than the 1st, is this their way of claiming back the €20 overpayment and were ALL recipients of FA overpaid.

It's starting on 8 October for everyone.

I only applied for FA today. Will I start getting paid from the 8th, or will it be backdated in a few weeks, if anyone knows? Surely they can't process my application in a week?

You will get it if and when they establish that you are entitled to it. that could take a number of weeks, but fuel allowance is never backdated.

But on the form I filled out today it said that I wouldn't be backdated if my application was made after this years heating season already started, which is the 8th Oct. I thought if I got it in before the 8th that I would be backdated if I had to wait?

    it is backdated

You can apply anytime but it will not be backdated if you apply after the fuel allowance season commences.

No you don't have to re apply, it will be on the system until you or the SW office stop it. So don't worry. I think though from a letter I got that anyone who got the payment last year were overpaid (their fault of course) and will get it a week later than usual.

What exactly is the criteria to apply for this? I thought it was only for Pensioners? Maybe I am thinking of something else.

Am being put on B.T.E.A. if that makes any difference.

Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment available for people on certain allowances. If the allowance is Jobseeker's Allowance/Benefit you must have been in reciept of it for a minimum of 13 months. The Fuel Allowance is currently €20 a week and the payment period for this season is officially from Monday, 8 October 2012 to Friday, 5 April 2013.

For BTEA I believe you need to qualify under your previous allowance, so if you were on Jobseeker's Allowance for 15 months before going on to BTEA then you should be able to apply.

Here's a link to the Citizens Information page, you can check which allowances are applicable and how/where to apply.

Got my JSA today and the fuel allowance was not paid. I quiered this again with welfare office and they said that Everyone was overpaid one week end of April and that the payment will start next week. I still don't know of anyone else who get the overpayment letter. Did people on here get the FA this week?
    thanks

I think the only people who will be getting it this week are new recipients (who didnt get an overpayment last year). My father got a letter saying he will get his payment with his pension on Friday 12th.

I got a letter a few months back about an overpayment by a week. Got paid the FA this week and it was deducted like it said it would be in the letter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 Kitty113

I'm still waiting on it, didn't get a letter or anything. Anyone else waiting?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭Yawns

Started back week commencing Monday the 18th. I got a letter stating I got overpaid by a week last year and I would be deducted the first week this year. It happened. A lot of people got the letter but others didn't. If you didn't get a letter it's possible you were overpaid last year too. When I received the money last week it had fuel allowance paid and then a €20 deduction below it. I got it this week with no deduction. If you check your slip, it should be noted if you received it and were deducted. If you haven't got your slip, then check this week's when you get paid if you have not yet.

Hi. Does anybody know if I can get fuel allowance while on Illness Benefit? I was on jobseekers allowance until May at which stage I became ill and went onto Illness Benefit immediate.
I got the fuel allowance last year, having received a form in the post to complete. I got no form this year, except for a letter earlier in the year saying that I was overpaid 20 euro and would have to wait a week later this year. However I see that the FA started to be paid on 8th. October but I haven't received anything? Has anybody else had this experience? Many thanks in anticipation.

What day do you get paid?

Hi. My benefit is paid into my account every Wednesday. So I half thought I would be paid in today, but it wasn't.

Have a pop into the local office tomorrow and ask them. Not sure if you can get it on illness benefit or if it's included already as I'm not familiar with that payment. Others should be able to answer better.

    Thanks Yawns. Will do.

I just found out that due to the FAS course I'm on starting the same week as the Fuel allowance began it hadn't automatically started as part of the trainee benefit. It meant getting a form signed/stamped by the FAS training centre office and taking that down to the Social Welfare office to get it stamped that I'd received FA before so should be getting it again this year, then drop it back into the FAS center.

Would think it would be a factor that was in play every autumn with courses there so they would make it clear there was a process needing to be followed or even ensure that a question was asked on the day they were sorting out payments, which wasn't done. I certainly didn't hear anything about this until the pay docket for the first week's pay turned up without the allowance payment on.

So thought I'd add that to this thread since the same thing might be in play with other people on FAS courses etc. Seems that most of the courses at the Galway training center started around the same time so could be that there are a number of people in the same boat. Might also be that the situation, starting date of both course and allowance pretty much overlapped, is more widespread since I think late starting was down to redtape central to Dublin.

Was wondering if I should start a thread separate to highlight that, if it is more widespread but assume anybody coming to this section to check it out will see this thread.
Just hope people do have the chance to sort it out without missing out on pay, or is it automatically backdated to the same start week if you're eligible?

Thanks everyone. I phoned S.W. and they tell me that people on illness allowance don't get fuel allowance, even though I went from jobseeker's allowance, where I got the fuel allowance, straight onto illness benefit in May when I became ill. So it seems ill people don't feel the cold. Tisserand

I dont know why exactly that would happen.

Just wondering if you are on benefit or allowance.

I know on jobseekers benefit you do not get the fuel allowance....but on jobseekers allowance you do.

I am on invalidity pension but not getting FA. Do you qualify for it automatically if you are on Invalidity pension or are you still means tested as well. If i am means tested I may not qualify and do not want to waste their time

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,228 ✭✭✭mrsbyrne

Yes its means tested. if you have household income of 100euro in excess of SW income, or savings in excess of 58000 you are excluded.
