If It's like the envy 15, I like the backlights. When you turn them on/off, because each key has its own LED, it flushes on like a wave. Very pretty.

I have the Envy 14 Spectre myself which is more like the black swan of the lineup. They are very stylish, and functional laptops. The sound is pretty decent on the 14, should be excellent on the 17 if it's got the subwoofer - mine doesn't, so some things sound flatter than they need to be. The 'mechanical' Beats volume dial isn't analog at all, it's just a nice looking dial that directly controls windows volume. I felt it was kind of a downer since there are times when it can fail to change volume like so many other digital volume dials, which is more or less a windows bug.

You will be getting that 17 for the exact oppossite I like the 14: the 17 will be awfully heavy. It packs a lot of entertainment-centric hardware. The 15 is already heavy as most average 17s, I'm afraid to see the Envy 17 in person and try to lift it. But if occasionally-transported mobile desktop solution is your bag, that's basically it. Makes a good permanent dorm station during the semester but not something I'd want to lug to the lecture halls.

The Envy line could be getting pulled for god knows what reason. Maybe they are depleting stock and relaunching something with windows 8 in mind. On the 14 I was just the other day thinking to myself just how more utilitarian the laptop would be if the screen was touch enabled..

Then again I did write an email through their executive channel critiquing the hit-and-miss spacebar on the chiclet keyboard. Hopefully that had something to do with it. Wouldn't mind them putting something out there with a better keyboard as far as typability goes. Which is a shame because its gorgeous looking.

There is still no sign of this on the online HP shop.I have a dv-7 pavilion 17 inch.Battery is starting to go now as its 4 years old.Looking to get something similar or better(as it is prone to overheating).
