I had the car in for the NCT last Friday , its a 2009 mondeo 1.8 tdci , I said I'd put it through early, with the way things are at the moment a lads situation could be completely different and worse off come January. Anyway to get to the point it failed on Nearside headlight aim. I booked the re-test and went to get the lights focused today , first garage I went to put the car on his machine and said the lights were perfectly aligned , he said he can't understand how it failed. He wouldn't take a penny off me and said I should get it checked somewhere else just to be doubly certain, so off I go to another garage and would you believe he said the exact same thing , the lights are perfect according to his machine!! So folks any ideas what I do now ? Say nothing and put the car back through the test and hope I get a different tester ? It just goes to show what a complete robbery this NCT lark is in my humble opinion.

i had a car fail on the same thing....i brought it to be focused and tested again. It failed again and the tester brought me out to show me it on the machine failing. i asked him to put it through on a different lane. He told me it would fail on another as well but after a few moments of arguing that 50 or 60 cars running over the rails the machine sits on a day... they could be slightly off...he put in another lane and hey presto it passed

That is excellent advice, I would never have thought of asking them to check it on another lane , thanks a million :D

Oh dear, so the NCT's test equipment could be wrong, so they are not perfect after all.

Looks like it, I wonder how much calibration the equipment gets and how regularly.

Had car back in for re-test this morning, the car passed. Nothing done to the car, no adjustment was made to the headlight . At least Dick Turpin wore a mask..........................

Though as has been said the equipment used on the first test could have not been calibrated that day or gone out of calibration from use that day. Like you say you never thought of asking for the car to be tested on another lane to prove that point. Its not the testers or NCTs fault. Machines can fail too. People are too quick to jump down the NCTs throat at times.

I'd say he had to as equipment had to be used. Frustrating but thats the rules.

I'm just going by what it says on the NCT website etc. It says if no equipment is being used in the retest then its free but there is a fee of €22 to use the equipment. If it was me I would have explained I brought it to a few garages and all said it was fine and look for a waiver on the fee. But we have no idea what the OP did until he lets us know.

OOoooh don't go gettin you knickers in a twist..

I'd not have paid and I'm sure if the OP pointed out on his return that he'd been to 2 garages and no adjustment was required he'd get a refund or not have to pay.

Machinery needs to be calibrated regularly but I very much doubt daily.
