Suitable cycling clothes

    Hi,

I've fairly recently started cycling on my road bike. Loving it!

On a very tight budget at the moment and from looking online it appears that cycling gear (especially for the long winter rides ahead ....yippee) seems like it's going to cost a fortune. Padded cycling tights cost around 80-90 quid.

Just wondered if anyone knew of any suppliers or stores that can provide gear at a slightly lower prices?

Also base layers will have to be worn so could I just buy these in an ordinary store but ensure that they're the correct material...ie some materials don't allow sweat to seep out of the top so when you sweat you get really cold!

What material should base layers be?

    Cheers

Lidl / Aldi run offers on simple base layers for cold weather cycling i picked some up in the last offers they had. They are reasonably good.

Try Ebay etc as there are plenty of clothing options out there. Also try the offer section of your local cycling store.

Yep, the Lidl/Aldi stuff is no harm to tide you over for a couple of months.

Most of my gear is dhb. It's not cheap, but you're talking €60 for your bib tights instead of €100, and you'll easily get two seasons out of them.

I always look at the likes of €300 "premium" gear and wonder what the point is when I've never needed to ask for more from my dhb stuff. Maybe it's one of those things you didn't realise you were missing until you bought it. Like a Garmin.

(Though it's funny that all the reviews above give it five stars while most list "expensive" as one of the cons. I guess if you've just spent €300 on a single piece of clothing you're not going to admit to its failings).

Mountain warehouse do some cheap cycling gear, as do Aldi/Lidl in fact a lot of hiking stuff might be similar. Just do some research on the materials of the products they have.

I wear running tights over my bib shorts, they're cheaper than the cycling specific tights.

If you can, drop into Decathalon in Belfast (out past the George Best Airport, next to Ikea): best value for cycle kit, and it lasts years (Aldi/Lidl: less so).

Just been on the decathlon website and the prices are very competitive and the quality seems good.

They just seem to deliver to British addresses.

    Thanks

They deliver to ireland from their belfast store. I havent done it, but have seen it on their website. I think you just put EIRE or something like that in the postcode. I much rather wander round their stores for days on end when I go on holiday to France!!

I have a pair of their bib shorts, and a jersey and loads of other stuff... their gear is top notch and i do be thinking i will be buying a pair of winter bib shorts here pretty soon!

I ordered off them about 2 weeks ago to a Dublin address. Got 4 t-shirts and bib shorts for £35 delivered.

Well worth ordering. Put Eire as your delivery address

I've worn Decathalon kit day-in-day-out for years, very hard wearing, and good technically, too. Belfast isn't that far these days, and you can stop off in the Titanic quarter or go into Victoria sqr and make a trip of it.

You'll get padded cycling tights for about €40 on wiggle.

For base layers you'll probably pay extra if they are labelled 'cycling base layers', look around sports shops and even department stores and you can find items that are cheaper and just as adequate.

+1 on DHB. Tights, shorts and merino base layers are good value.

And merino base layers are brill. Warm whether wet or dry and don't smell like synthetic base layers do.

On a budget I'd suggest giving the gear from Tenn Outdoors a look, I got some jerseys from them and they're fine. They have a website but the best value from them is on their ebay and amazon shops.

    Hello,

I'm from Galway and living here.

Have tried ordering a few cycling bits for the winter online from the Decathlon store in Belfast but when I am asked to enter the postcode the site doesn't allow me to continue with the sale and jumps back/kicks me out of the system.

Would anyone know what it is exactly that I should enter in as the postcode here? ....as we don't have any in Ireland !

I know it's possible to order online from the Republic because someone replied to this thread before and said that they had some stuff delivered from the belfast store to Dublin.

    Advice appreciated.

    Have a look here: www.decathlon.co.uk/ecuk/m/zip/10456_1_7.zip_dir/Ireland/index.html

Basically you use EIRE & 123 as the postcode

+1 for Decathlon. I stock up every time I'm in France (just on way back now with loads of goodies :-D). I got a set of bib tights with braces for about €35, had the same pair for the past year and they're the business. Other options would be a few pairs of cheap shorts and leg warmers. Their basic shorts are less than €10 and great value, they'd get you going anyway. Leg warmers are about the €18 mark
