    Hi,

Just looking to tap into the wealth of mechanical knowledge here please..help gratefully received. I've just found out that my wife's car has been leaking a little coolant recently. To make things tricker, the Engine temperature gauge has been on the fritz intermittently. She got the temperature warning light on a couple of days ago, so yesterday, I dutifully added 50/50 mix of coolant and water to the max level having left the engine overnight to cool down. Started the car to check if the temp warning light came on and it didn't. On her way home yesterday, the temp warning light came on again so had a look and the level in expansion bottle. It had dropped but not below the min. This morning, I added more diluted coolant, started the car to check the level and the all of the coolant had disappeared, and no sign of anything on the ground..I presume this has been hoovered up into the engine. Any suggestions as to what this might be and how much its going to cost. With all of the other things that need doing, we are looking to see if its economically viable to fix...

    Thanks for any help....

well, if it was leaking, it mean , there is very little coolant left. if you did top up expansion bottle , it doeasnt mean you add coolant in system. It could be just air lock in cooling system, so it took some coolant from there.... it has to be bleed air out properly.
Before suggest something, let us know, what car have you got ?? - make, model, year , engine (petrol /diesel), size.

Didi you fix that leak ?

did you check the oil dipstick, do you see oil or does it look like mayo, oil ok, mayo get to garage and have coollant pressure test done.

i think at that stage there is heavy smoke from exhaust , or car is very sluggish.

Standard procedure is to top up the coolant (50/50 mix of correct type of coolant) very slowly, a dash at a time, with the engine running and the heater turned to hot all the way. There is often a valve at the top of the system that you open to release an air lock.

As said with make, model and year you'll get more specific advice.

Might you didnt notice, op top up coolant in expansion bottle, right way is to do it directly in radiator, ... but it depend what car he has.

Depending on the type of car, there may simply have been air in the system when you filled up the first time and this bled out when you started the car after topping up the second time.

The won't always be oil mixing with water if the head gasket is gone so just because the oil cap etc is clean doesn't mean a HG failure is ruled out.
