    Hi,

I am looking to buy an iPad (the newest one) as a present for someone. I am confused as to the different types available.

The 16gb for €479 is wifi only.
The 16gb for €519 is wifi and cellular.
The 16gb for €599 is wifi and cellular and 3g.

What is the difference between the above three in terms of internet connectivity. Will the cheapest option work without a dongle etc. or do they all need some form of an external pay monthly internet service like mobile broadband.

She currently has a desktop computer in her home that is connected to a vodafone broadband and phone service, which is connected by an ethernet cable to a modem.

Which of the above would you recommend. I want her to be able to use it for email, websites, photos, youtube videos etc at home and on the go.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the first one will just connect to the modem in your house.

the other 2 can connect to a mobile phone network aswell

EDIT:dont have an ipad but would guess that you'd need a sim card and that you'd have to pay for the data that you use

Sure, within range of a wireless network.

No, only the "cellular" variant, which connects to the internet via 3G or 4G networks. They need a SIM card with data plan.

I'm still not quite sure. I have an iphone on a 3 bill pay it works everywhere. I know someone else with an iphone on prepay and they put credit into it and the data uses up the credit. Can someone use this example to explain how the ipad works to me. Regardless of where I buy an ipad like pc words or apple.ie do I then have to go to the likes of three or vodafone and buy a sim and a plan?

Only if you buy the "cellular" version. If you want to use this feature, you'll need a microSIM card with data plan, pre-paid or subscription.
