Braking - Shimano 2300

Quick question, the rear brakes on my bike, Spech Allez, are not releasing properly. They are releasing 50%, fortunately just far enough not to be catching but it's not right all the same. The braking unit is well oiled. I've narrowed it down to the brake lever shifting unit, shimano 2300.

After I pull the brake lever and it returns to position, there is some play left in the lever, ie. once I go to brake again, the lever doesn't seem to be catching for the first 10-15mm.
Once I give the cable under the bar a slight pull the brake unit pops straight out and there is a click in the lever unit at it returns to normal, ie it bites straight away.

Hope that all makes sense and I was wondering would anyone have any idea how to fix it. Taking the bike to France Saturday and I would like to have it fixed by then. Thanks

Check your brake pads, they can wear with a groove matching the groove on the wheel which can make them stick to the wheel. If this is the case either replace them, or if there's life left in them, sand them down slightly.

Also check that the cables are running freely, you could have a bit of grit or muck somewhere in your outer cable which is stopping the inner cable running smoothly, or have a kink somewhere on your inner cable.

Sounds like the brake cable is not running freely, maybe frayed or rusty, so you could replace that and see if it fixes it.

Sticky cable. You could clean and lube them.. but prob best to just replace cable inners and outers altogether.

Thanks lads, the bike is only 12 weeks old and has only done in the region of 1100km. It was cleaned after every wet cycle, is it common for the cables to give up so soon?

No. Every 5-10k or bi-annually at most.
