One of my friends has applied to a job which is to cover maternity leave.
They have a lot of experience and are hopeful of getting this job.
At the moment my friend is on the dole and want to know the following.
Has anyone taken a job to cover maternity leave and were you paid weekly doing this?
Could you ask your boss to pay you weekly in this case as you can't get the dole once you start a job?
Also do you have to go the dole office to sign off or can you do it on line?
Do you ring the tax office, give them you pps number & tell them you are starting a job in /// from this date so your tax can be sorted out?
Also will you pay less tax as you have not been working since the start of the year or do you do make a claim if you overpay tax at the end of the year?
    Thanks for your help.

Whether you're paid weekly or not is up to the company - it's nothing to do with whether it's maternity cover or not.

    Yes, you can ask.

I think you can sign off on-line - ask over in State Benefits if you cannot find the link. Or you may have to visit the office. Or it may depend on local policy.

Yes, you need to ring the tax office. They need to know:
    - the employer's registration number
    - the start-date
    - that you have not been working so far this year.

And yes, you will pay less tax because you have not been working earlier in the year.

If it's a case that you won't be paid for a while after you start work (e.g. monthly payroll run) & would find it hard to make ends meet until you eventually get your first paycheque you could enquire when you start if an advance on your wages is possible, though you may not feel comfortable doing this being a newbie. Speak to a manager/supervisor & ask if there are any procedures/options in place to assist people in your position.

You could go to your local Community Welfare Officer & explain the situation to him/her, who might be in a position to give you a once off payment to tide you over until payday. This payment, if offered, may have to be paid back once you do get paid.

This is what happened me recently. I had my old p45 (year previous) handed that in, my tax was then updated. I closed my claim online. I originally went in to close it when I knew I had the job, but the SW officer told me to hold off until my first payment from the job. (This is not the standard practice, but she said that how else am I meant to survive for the next few weeks).
