Who gets paid for August?

    Our school started back on 23rd August, however any new teachers, or returning temporary teachers from last year who have now received an RPT have found out that the Dept of Education will not be paying them for any days before 1st September. That means they have worked seven days for nothing on top of having no pay over the summer! Does anybody know anything about this or if it's standard? It's a DEIS school. Thanks in advance.

    If I've been informed accurately, you'll be paid for these days at the end of this forthcoming school year, in June 2013. I'm not sure at all what the logic is to that.

    Can't imagine that's legal. If they don't get paid for the days in August at the end of September they should get on to their union.

    here we go again, same story every year. If you have a year contract, then you work the 167 days etc etc. It can happen that those days start before Sept so what you need to do is march into your principal and say you don't want the job until 1st Sept........

    You are paid for the year and you work the same amount of days.

    I very much doubt this. I was told that a full year contract, if you have one, runs from 1/9 to 31/8. That in effect you get paid for august 2012 in August 2013 when you're not working - in theory. In practice, you simply don't get paid.

    All RPT contracts begin on the 1st of September and end on 31st August of the following year. You only get paid for teaching time after Sept 1st.

    Two choices:
    1. Forego the RPT contract and get paid for the few days in August but have no pay outside actual days when the school was in operation
    2. Keep the RPT contract, lose pay for the few days in August but get paid over Christmas holidays, Easter holidays summer holidays and mid-term breaks.

    Yes, that would make more sense. Either way, it seems it will be the end of the school year (i.e. end of August, rather than end of May) that you'll be paid if you've a 12 month contract.

    Imagine that you were let go at the end of that year but got a new job straight away - say a maternity leave. So the maternity leave starts August 25th say and ends at Christmas. You have then worked the last week in August in both years but you only got paid for one of them.
